      Muncy (oblique) has begun taking dry swings and doing plyo-ball workouts, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

      Advice: This is a step forward for Muncy, as he had previously been unable to swing a bat at all after continuing to experience soreness in his oblique. However, manager Dave Roberts said last week that the third baseman is on a "slow program," so Muncy doesn't appear to be particularly close to a return.       Springer is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics.

      Advice: Springer went 0-for-4 in the series opener Friday, and he has failed to register a hit over his last three games. The 34-year-old is slashing .202/.292/.305 with five home runs and 13 RBI over 243 plate appearances this season. With Springer out of Saturday's lineup, Daulton Varsho and Davis Schneider will occupy right and left field, respectively, while Spencer Horwitz makes his 2024 debut at second base against Oakland right-hander Luis Medina.       Irvin (6-2) picked up the win Friday in a 6-3 victory over the Rays, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out six without walking a battter.

      Advice: Three straight singles in the sixth inning kept Irvin from recording his fifth quality start of the season, but the southpaw did tie his season high in strikeouts. He hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last 10 appearances (eight starts) dating back to April 15, posting a 1.88 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 36:7 K:BB through 52.2 innings over that stretch.       Alex Bregman went 2-for-4 with a walk on Friday in his return to the Astros’ lineup.

      Advice: Bregman didn’t skip a beat, reaching base safely in three of his five plate appearances following a brief one-game absence due to left hand soreness.       Merrill went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 10-3 win over the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: This was Merrill's first steal since May 14. Over the 20 contests between thefts, he hit a meager .224 (15-for-67) with no walks and just one extra-base hit. The 21-year-old still has a respectable .268/.303/.344 slash line with three home runs, 22 RBI, 24 runs scored and eight steals over 63 contests this year. Merrill has been benched against some left-handed pitchers recently, but he should have no trouble maintaining a majority of the playing time in center field over Jose Azocar.       Diaz went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Friday's 7-1 win over the Angels.

      Advice: Diaz opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and added a two-run homer in the seventh. He's gone yard in four straight contests, an impressive run of power after he went 39 games without a homer prior to this surge. The catcher is at a .258/.285/.416 slash line, seven long balls, 32 RBI, 22 runs scored and 10 doubles over 56 contests. With Kyle Tucker (lower leg) going on the injured list Friday, Yordan Alvarez has seen more time in the field, giving the Astros the option of moving Diaz to designated hitter rather than having him at catcher full-time in the short term.       Cole Irvin allowed three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings and got the win in the Orioles’ 6-3 victory over the Rays on Friday.



      Advice: Irvin gave up eight hits, walked none and struck out six. The win was his sixth of the season. Irvin hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs since his second start of the year back on April 10th. His ERA on the season is now 2.87, though his 4.19 xFIP tells a different story. The 30-year-old left-hander will see if he can keep it going against the Braves at home next week.

      Bregman (hand) is starting at third base and batting second in Friday's series opener against the Angels, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

      Advice: Bregman injured his left hand against the Cardinals on Tuesday after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. X-rays came back negative, but the Astros opted to scratch Bregman from Wednesday's lineup to give the 30-year-old additional rest.
