    • Collects first save
Beeks struck out two and gave up a solo home run in two-thirds of an inning Friday, recording his first save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Pirates.

Advice: With Justin Lawrence (paternity leave) away from the team, Rockies manager Bud Black called on Jake Bird to get the final out of the eighth inning and the first of the ninth, but the right-hander needed 25 pitches to do it and left a runner on base when he exited. Black then turned to Beeks to close things out, but the southpaw made things dicey by immediately serving up a two-run shot to Oneil Cruz before finally getting the job done. Lawrence should be back by the end of the weekend, and Beeks has never recorded more than two saves in a season in his career, but he does appear to have earned a spot in Colorado's high-leverage crew. Through 14 appearances and 16 innings, he's posted a 2.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 12:8 K:BB. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:25 pm

    • Jalen Beeks records sixth career save for Rockies
Despite giving up a homer in two-thirds of an inning, Jalen Beeks picked up his sixth career save Friday against the Pirates.

Advice: The homer was a two-run shot from Oneil Cruz, plating one inherited runner. Beeks got the call tonight because Justin Lawrence is on paternity leave. It’s the fifth straight season in which he’s appeared (he missed 2021 after Tommy John) in which he’s earned a save, but he’s recorded just six total. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:49 pm

    • May require rehab assignment
Manager Matt Quatraro said Friday that sending Marsh (elbow) on a rehab assignment before returning from the IL "would be a smart thing to do," Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Marsh has been on the injured list since April 25 due to a bruised right elbow. He threw a bullpen session Monday and did so again Friday, though he will likely need to face live hitters before he makes his rehab appearance. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:46 pm

    • Mason Miller silences Pirates in non-save spot
Mason Miller fired a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday in a non-save situation against the Pirates.

Advice: Miller got the call to protect a four-run lead in the final frame after needing 16 pitches to close out Tuesday’s victory less than 24 hours ago. He got Jack Suwinski to ground out and fanned Henry Davis before coaxing a game-ending ground out from Ke’Bryan Hayes. He averaged 100.8 mph on his fastball and needed just 10 pitches to spin a perfect frame. The hard-throwing 25-year-old righty has reeled off 12 consecutive scoreless appearances since April 2, and has converted eight saves to go along with a microscopic 1.26 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 29/4 K/BB ratio across 14 1/3 innings of work. Simply put, he’s one of the best relievers in baseball already. Rotoworld Wednesday, 3:07 pm

    • Mason Miller strikes out side in earning save
Mason Miller struck out all three batters he faced Tuesday for a save against the Pirates.

Advice: It’s fine to marvel at Miller’s numbers in the closer’s role to date, but this is what an ace-level talent should be doing while pitching two or three innings per week. There’s a very good chance Miller would struggle to hold up as a starter, but we might never find out for sure. As is, Miller has a 1.35 ERA and eight saves in 13 1/3 innings. • Lights out for eighth save
Miller picked up the save Tuesday against Oakland, striking out three during a perfect ninth inning.

Advice: Miller capped off April with yet another dominant display, punching out all three batters he faced. He appeared in 11 games during the month, allowing four hits and three walks with 30 strikeouts over 12.1 scoreless innings. He's also converted all eight of his save chances in 2024, giving him the sixth-most saves in MLB. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 9:36 pm

    • Records fifth save
Bednar earned the save against the Giants on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three over one inning.

Advice: Bednar entered the game with a three-run lead in the bottom of the 10th and surrendered a two-run shot to Jorge Soler in the leadoff at-bat to make it 4-3. The reliever also allowed an infield single in the frame but managed to work his way through it, getting all his outs by way of strikeout. Bednar has now converted each of his last four save attempts, though he's also allowed at least one run in back-to-back appearances, leaving him with a dreadful 13.50 ERA in April. • David Bednar hangs on for save against Giants
David Bednar was charged with two runs (one earned) in the 10th inning on Saturday against the Giants, but still managed to record his fifth save of the season.

Advice: Bednar got the call to protect a three-run lead in extra innings and immediately served up a two-run homer to Giants slugger Jorge Soler, which slashed the lead down to a single run. He struck out Michael Conforto before giving up a one-out single to Thairo Estrada, but managed to escape the jam by striking out LaMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski to end the contest. He’s converted just five of eight save chances this season and holds an inflated 11.70 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 15/3 K/BB ratio across 10 innings (12 appearances). It’s hard to draw firm conclusions based on early-season results, but Bednar has certainly struggled out of the gate. Rotoworld Sunday, 4:01 am

    • Falters in San Francisco
Bednar (1-2) took the loss Friday against the Giants after he allowed three runs on two hits and a walk without recording an out.

Advice: Pirates manager Derek Shelton turned to his closer in the bottom of the ninth of a scoreless tie, but Bednar gave up a walk and a single before serving up a walk-off, three-run homer to Patrick Bailey. Bednar entered the contest with three straight scoreless appearances, but he has now allowed at least three runs in three separate outings and has a 12.00 ERA across nine innings overall. The right-hander is 4-for-7 in save opportunities and has seen his job security decline significantly after beginning the campaign as one of the top closers in MLB with 58 saves and a 2.27 ERA in the previous two seasons.
