      Triston Casas (rib) told reporters Saturday that he’s on track to resume swinging a bat next week.

      Advice: Casas has been on the shelf, and unable to resume hitting at all, since suffering torn cartilage in his left rib cage back in mid-April. The 24-year-old slugger doesn’t have a firm return timetable yet, but the fact that he’ll resume swinging soon provides some optimism that he’ll be ready to return when first eligible on June 21.       Yandy Díaz is not in the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Royals.

      Advice: Díaz hasn’t been able to replicate last year’s form that fueled a career-best 22 homer explosion, but the plate skills have remained relatively stable at their usual near-elite levels.       Advice: Another bullpen meltdown wasted a big night from the Mets' offense, as Alonso's seventh-inning solo shot off Nick Avila was New York's third homer of the game. The first baseman extended his hitting streak to nine games, and over the last 15 contests Alonso is slashing .313/.362/.609 with four of his 12 homers on the season and 10 of his 26 RBI.       Jake Cronenworth is starting at second base for the first time in the 2024 season.

      Advice: This felt inevitable after the Padres traded for Luis Arraez, who is a well below-average defensive second baseman. Arraez will now slide to first base with Cronenworth moving to second. Cronenworth has been an above-average defensive second baseman over the last four seasons, so this move doesn’t figure to hurt the Padres at all and could be a boost for their pitchers.       Advice: Alonso opened the scoring in the first inning, sending a fastball from Triston McKenzie into the right-field seats for his 11th homer of the year. The 29-year-old Alonso has put together an eight-game hitting streak while going 18-for-59 (.305) with three homers and a .936 OPS in his last 14 contests.
