  • Struggles early in loss
    Cortes (4-7) took the loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

    Advice: Cortes surrendered a two-run home run to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the first inning and an RBI double to Alejandro Kirk in the fourth. He was pulled with one out in the fifth frame after putting runners on first and third but reliever Jake Cousins was able to escape the jam. Cortes had rattled off three consecutive quality starts entering Saturday, but this is also the second time in June the southpaw has been unable to complete five innings.   • Strikes out eight in win
    Bassitt (7-6) earned the win over the Yankees on Saturday, allowing one unearned run on six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over six innings.

    Advice: Bassitt fired five scoreless innings before Anthony Volpe reached on an error in the sixth and came around to score on a single by Aaron Judge. He has now logged three consecutive quality starts and has not allowed more than three earned runs in an outing since April 26. The 35-year-old has lowered his ERA over two full runs since the conclusion of April and now owns a 3.24 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 91:37 K:BB over 97.1 innings this season.   • Megill gives up four runs in no-decision Saturday
    Tylor Megill allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings and got a no-decision against the Astros on Saturday.



    Advice: Megill gave up five hits, walked three and struck out six. He pitched well enough to win and looked like he was going to before the Mets bullpen blew a late lead. Megill has a 5.08 ERA on the season, but he’s pitched better than that as his xFIP is 3.92. The 28-year-old right-hander is set to face the Nationals on the road next week.

  • Valdez allows six runs in no-decision Saturday
    Framber Valdez allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings and got a no-decision in the Astros’ 9-6 victory over the Mets on Saturday.



    Advice: Valdez gave up 10 hits, walked three and struck out five. He allowed at least five runs for the second time in his last four starts. Valdez’ ERA is 4.11 on the year, though there is some hope for him to bounce back given his 3.55 xFIP. The 30-year-old left-hander is set to face the Blue Jays on the road next week.

  • Resumes light throwing
    Darvish (elbow) has resumed playing light catch, per MLB.com.

    Advice: Darvish was expected to come off the injured list and make a start for the Padres on Tuesday, but a bout of right elbow inflammation put a halt to that plan. The right-hander underwent imaging that came back clean, and the fact that he's now doing light throwing suggests that the issue isn't serious.   • Max Fried limits Pirates to one over six
    Max Fried fired six innings while allowing one run with four strikeouts in a no-decision versus the Pirates on Saturday.

    Advice: Fried wasn’t as dominant in terms of missing bats as his starting counterpart Paul Skenes was, but he was effective nonetheless. The southpaw hurler did allow six hits and three walks, but he was unscored upon minus a sac fly in the fifth inning from Edward Olivares.   • Paul Skenes strike out nine against Atlanta
    Paul Skenes struck out nine over six innings of one-run baseball but didn’t factor into the decision Saturday against Atlanta.

    Advice: Skenes gave up a leadoff homer to Jarred Kelenic in the first, and from that point out he was essentially lights out. The right-hander scattered six total hits in the contests with two walks allowed and 61-of-102 pitches going for strikes. To say that Skenes has lived up to the hype thus far is an understatement, and over his last four starts he’s given up a total of three runs with a 32/4 K/BB over 25 1/3 innings.   • Labors in loss
    Gray (9-5) took the loss against the Reds on Saturday, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

    Advice: Gray allowed two runs in the third inning then endured a rough fifth frame, loading the bases and yielding a run on an error by Nolan Arenado. He was pulled after the error at 92 pitches, and each of the three inherited runners came around to score before the end of the frame. Gray generated a solid 14 swinging strikes on 92 pitches but failed to complete five innings for just the second time in 15 starts this season. On the year, the 34-year-old owns a stellar 2.98 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 109:23 K:BB over 87.2 innings and lines up to face the Nationals next week. Rotowire.com Today, 4:15 pm

    Advice: Castillo was initially projected to start Tuesday at Baltimore but with Bryan Woo (hamstring) hitting the IL, Castillo will pitch Sunday on four days rest.
