    • Nestor Cortes strikes out eight against Red Sox
      Nestor Cortes held the Red Sox to one run in six innings and struck out eight in the Yankees’ 3-1 victory Friday.

      Advice: Cortes gave up 410-, 397- and 386-foot flyballs, but Yankee Stadium managed to hold two of them, with only Romy Gonzalez leaving the yard. Cortes remained stuck at 4-7 while improving his now 3.41 ERA and 105/20 K/BB ratio through 111 innings. He’ll get the Rays next time out. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:58 pm
       
    • Clay Holmes blows save by giving up homer
      Clay Holmes took his fifth blown save after giving up a game-tying two-run homer Friday against the Red Sox.

      Advice: Holmes retired the first two batters he faced, but then a single and a homer ruined his night. The homer, a 405-foot blast from Masataka Yoshida, was just the second he’s allowed in 36 innings this season. He’s been stuck on 19 saves since June 9, and while that’s mostly the fault of his teammates, he has given up runs in five of his last seven appearances. Even though Holmes is almost certainly one of the game’s 15- or 20-best relievers, there is the chance that the Yankees will supplant him in the closer’s role at the trade deadline.     • Evan Phillips strikes out side in 14th save
      Evan Phillips struck out the side while picking up a save Friday for the Dodgers in their 8-5 win over the Brewers.

      Advice: Phillips was filthy while picking up the save, needing only 12 pitches to fan the side. He still hasn’t blown a save in 2024, and his 14 stops are more impressive when you consider he missed close to a month with his hamstring strain.     • Aaron Civale allows three homers in debut with MIL
      Aaron Civale was charged for four runs in five innings in a no-decision against the Brewers on Friday.

      Advice: This was Civale’s first start as a member of the Brew Crew, and it’s fair to say it was a mixed bag. He gave up three homers — including two of the three that Will Smith hit in the game — but he also struck out eight and allowed only two other hits in the contest. The former Guardian and Ray has not shown any consistency in 2024, and Saturday was a pretty good example of the risks that come with using him as a fantasy option, especially against a team as good as the Dodgers.     • Glasnow allows grand slam in no-decision vs. MIL
      Tyler Glasnow went six innings while surrendering five runs in a start against the Brewers while not qualifying for a decision.

      Advice: If you take away one swing, this start looks a heck of a lot better. Glasnow allowed only three hits while striking out seven and walking two, but whenever you give up a grand slam, you’re literally taking away a chance for a quality start. In this case, the bases were jammed and then cleared by Rhys Hoskins to give Milwaukee a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Fortunately for Glasnow and the Dodgers, Los Angeles was able to score six unanswered to get the win. His final start before the All-Star break is scheduled against the Tigers on Friday.       Suarez allowed three runs on four hits in one-third of an inning to take a blown save in Friday's 10-8 win over the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Suarez has typically been dominant when called upon, but he served up a grand slam to Alek Thomas, allowing three inherited runners to score, and then a two-run home run to Randal Grichuk. While the Diamondbacks briefly took an 8-7 lead, Stephen Kolek was able to finish off the inning, and the Padres rallied to win in their half of the ninth. Both of Suarez's blown saves this year have come over his last eight appearances, a span in which he's given up six runs (five earned) across 6.1 innings. He's at a 1.77 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 33:7 K:BB through 35.2 innings overall while adding 22 saves and a hold. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:31 pm

      The Blue Jays released Mayza on Friday.

      Advice: Mayza was DFA'd by the Jays on Saturday after posting an 8.03 ERA in 24.2 innings, and he'll now be jettisoned out of the organization and into the open market. The 32-year-old southpaw posted a 1.52 ERA in 53.1 frames just a year ago, so he could still draw some interest in free agency, but his next opportunity will likely come in the form of a minor-league contract.       Hader picked up a save in Friday's 13-12 win against the Twins. He faced two batters, allowing one run on one hit while striking out one.

      Advice: Hader likely didn't expect to enter Friday's contest as the Astros held a 13-5 lead entering the ninth. However, Luis Contreras allowed three runs and then loaded the bases, forcing the call to the Houston closer. Hader allowed a grand slam to Carlos Correa to bring the Twins within one before fanning Manuel Margot for his 15th save of the campaign. The Houston southpaw now sports a 3.92 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 61:11 K:BB across 39 total innings while going 15-for-16 in save chances. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:26 pm

      Lopez (8-7) took the loss Friday against Houston, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out six.

      Advice: Despite not allowing a homer, the Minnesota right-hander managed to yield six or more runs for the fourth time this season. Lopez generated a paltry eight whiffs out of his 91 pitches as Houston was dialed in on his arsenal. The 28-year-old now sports a disappointing 5.18 ERA across 99 innings on the season.
