      Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated Thursday that Masataka Yoshida could wind up requiring surgery on his injured left thumb.

      Advice: There’s significant concern that Yoshida could wind up requiring an extended absence as the Red Sox continue gathering medical information after he landed on the injured list earlier this week with a left thumb strain. The 30-year-old slugger, who has transitioned to designated hitter almost exclusively this season, underwent an MRI earlier this week and the club has declined to provide an update on his status. The right-hander got back on track with a strong outing Wednesday, notching his third quality start and second victory of the season. Crawford has been outstanding for the Red Sox early in the campaign, ranking fifth among qualified starters with a 1.56 ERA through 40.1 innings.       Advice: Although Wheeler wasn't able to extend his streak of one-hit starts, he delivered another excellent outing. His lone blemish came in the second inning when Ehire Adrianza swatted a two-out solo homer. Wheeler has been one of the best arms in baseball lately, having surrendered one run on seven hits with 22 strikeouts in 18.1 innings across his last three starts.
