    • Slated for rehab assignment
Javier (neck) will begin a rehab assignment over the weekend, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Manager Joe Espada didn't specify exactly when Javier's first rehab appearance will be, nor did he say how long the 27-year-old right-hander will remain in the minors. However, there had been speculation that Javier would be able to avoid a rehab assignment completely, so he may only need to make one start before returning to an Astros rotation that has already dealt with numerous injuries this season. • Ryan Mountcastle’s homer helps O’s beat Yankees
Ryan Mountcastle went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in a 7-2 win for the Orioles over the Yankees on Thursday.

Advice: Mountcastle tied the game at 1-1 with his solo homer off Carlos Rodón in the third inning. That’s the fifth homer of the year, and his RBI single in the fifth brings that total to 16. It’s easy to forget about the 27-year-old because of all the star power in Baltimore, but Mountcastle is no slouch, and he’s slashing .290/.345/.495 to prove it. Rotoworld 49 minutes ago
    • Cristian Javier to make rehab start this weekend
Cristian Javier (neck) will begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend.

Advice: It’s an extremely encouraging development for Houston’s injury-plagued rotation as Javier appears close to returning after landing on the injured list back on April 21 with neck discomfort. The 27-year-old righty might be ready to return after just one rehab outing, but nothing official yet. Rotoworld 51 minutes ago

    • Josh Bell swats fourth homer of season Thursday
Josh Bell hit a solo homer Thursday in a victory over the Rockies.

Advice: Bell tied the game at 3-3 with a solo homer off Peter Lambert. The 31-year-old has gone deep four times in the first 33 games of action for the Marlins while registering a .579 OPS. Those numbers will go up, but maybe not enough to suggest him as a fantasy option in the majority of redraft leagues. Rotoworld 55 minutes ago

    • Absent from lineup
Martinez is out of the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Cubs.

Advice: Martinez has been given one day off in each of his first two series since joining the Mets as the club eases him back into action. That plan could continue for a bit longer before he assumes everyday duties at designated hitter. DJ Stewart will serve as the Mets' DH on Thursday. Rotowire.com Today, 7:47 am

    • Yankees activate Alex Verdugo from paternity list
Yankees activated OF Alex Verdugo from the paternity list.

Advice: Verdugo will return for the final game of a four-game series against Baltimore. The 27-year-old outfielder is on pace for his best OPS percentage since 2020 when he was with the Red Sox. He’s currently slashing .267/.358/.446 across 120 plate appearances this season. • Returns from paternity leave
The Yankees activated Verdugo from the paternity list Thursday.

Advice: Verdugo missed three games while tending to more important personal matters, but he's rejoined the club Thursday and presumably will be back in the lineup for their afternoon tilt against the Orioles. Aaron Judge played some left field while Verdugo was away but will now return to center field. Rotowire.com Today, 7:20 am

    • Projected starter Tuesday
Gallen (hamstring) is the projected starter for next Tuesday's game against the Reds.

Advice: Gallen was removed from his previous start due to a hamstring injury but was in line to take his next turn this week. The right-hander had been expected to start Wednesday, which was then moved to Friday, but he will now be pushed back until next week. There is no ongoing issues with the hamstring; Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo opted instead to take advantage of upcoming days off in the schedule to give Gallen extra time. • Justin Steele goes 3 1/3 innings in rehab start
Justin Steele (hamstring) was a bit rusty in his first minor league rehab start at Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, giving up three runs on six hits over his 3 1/3 innings of work.

Advice: The 28-year-old southpaw walked one and struck out four on the day, throwing 41 of his 63 total pitches for strikes. Cubs’ skipper Craig Counsell told reporters afterwards that all went well with Steele’s start and that he’ll meet the team in Chicago on Friday to determine the next step. It had been anticipated that Steele would only require one minor league rehab start before he was cleared to return, and it’s looking like that very well could be the case.
