    • Set for two more rehab starts
Manager Bud Black said Wednesday that Marquez (elbow) will make two more rehab starts with Double-A Hartford, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Advice: Marquez struggled heavily in his latest rehab outing at Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, allowing four earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning and throwing just 33 pitches. The 29-year-old righty was originally slated for just one additional start after Friday, but his abbreviated appearance will cause the Rockies to add another game to his rehab stint, ruling him out for a return to Colorado before the All-Star break. Since restarting his assignment June 12, Marquez has allowed eight earned runs in 8.2 innings while striking out 13 batters and walking three. Rotowire.com 42 minutes ago

    • German Marquez to be ready after All-Star break
Rockies’ manager Bud Black told reporters on Wednesday that German Marquez (elbow) is expected to make two more minor league rehab starts at Double-A Hartford.

Advice: If all goes well with those two outings, it sounds like the 29-year-old right-hander could be ready to join the Rockies’ rotation immediately following the All-Star break. Marquez — who is recovering from Tommy John surgery — has posted a 9.58 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and a 14/4 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings through his first five rehab outings. Rotoworld 43 minutes ago

    • Rays recall Justin Sterner from Triple-A Durham
Rays recalled RHP Justin Sterner from Triple-A Durham.

Advice: The 27-year-old right-hander has pitched well in two appearances with the Rays this season, posting a 2.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a 4/1 K/BB ratio over his four innings of work. He’ll give manager Kevin Cash another option to deploy in the middle innings. Rotoworld 57 minutes ago
    • Tigers recall Keider Montero to start on Wednesday
Tigers recalled RHP Keider Montero from Triple-A Toledo.

Advice: The 23-year-old right-hander will take the place of the injured Casey Mize (hamstring) in the team’s rotation. He’ll start on Wednesday night against the Twins. Montero has already made two appearances with the Tigers this season, registering a 9.35 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and an 11/4 K/BB ratio over 8 2/3 innings. He shouldn’t be considered as a streaming option on Wednesday night against the high-powered Twins’ offense. Rotoworld Today, 3:07 pm

    • Tigers place Casey Mize (hamstring) on 15-day IL
Tigers placed RHP Casey Mize on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 1, with a left hamstring strain.

Advice: Mize suffered the injury during Friday’s start against the Angels. The Tigers are hopeful that he’ll require only a minimum stint on the injured list before he’s ready to return. Keider Montero was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take Mize’s spot in the Tigers’ rotation and he’ll start on Wednesday evening against the Twins. Rotoworld Today, 3:03 pm

    • Shut down from throwing
Almonte will be shut down from throwing after receiving a second opinion on his right shoulder strain Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Manager Craig Counsell noted Wednesday that Almonte "didn't get great news" during his second opinion, and the right-hander will decide whether to resume rehab through a strengthening program or undergo surgery for his strained right shoulder, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports. Before landing on the injured list in May, Almonte registered six holds and one save over 17 outings with a 3.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB across 15.2 innings. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list June 27, and the 30-year-old could be on the shelf for the rest of the season if he opts for surgery. Rotowire.com Today, 3:03 pm

    • Likely returning in relief
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that Bradford (rib/back) has resumed throwing off a mound, and the left-hander is likely to fill a relief role once back from the injured list, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The 26-year-old was dominant in three starts for Texas with a 1.40 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB before he suffered a lower-back strain and a stress fracture in his rib, but he's not expected to rejoin the rotation once healthy. Max Scherzer is finally healthy after missing nearly the first three months of 2024, and Tyler Mahle (elbow) is also moving toward his season debut. Bradford's buildup and rehab assignment should be shorter since he's coming back as a reliever, but the Rangers are likely still looking for him to cover multiple innings and be an option for spot starts. • Yency Almonte gets bad news from second opinion
Yency Almonte (shoulder) did not get great news from the second opinion that he received on his injured shoulder.

Advice: The Cubs will have him shut down from throwing for a while before making a decision on whether or not he’ll undergo a surgical procedure of continue to go with the rest and rehab route. He shouldn’t be expected to return any time this season. Rotoworld Today, 2:59 pm

    • Recalled ahead of start Wednesday
The Diamondbacks recalled Mena from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Advice: Mena was in the Diamondbacks' clubhouse Tuesday, and manager Torey Lovullo noted that the right-hander, if officially called up, would deserve the opportunity to start Wednesday, per PHNX Diamondbacks. Mena was part of the package acquired by the Diamondbacks from the White Sox in the Dominic Fletcher trade in February. Mena has spent the entire year in Reno, and over his 16 minor-league starts, the 21-year-old is 3-2 with a 4.90 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 89:38 K:BB over 82.2 innings. He will make his major-league debut Wednesday on the road against the Dodgers. Rotowire.com Today, 2:50 pm
