• Masataka Yoshida might require thumb surgery
Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated Thursday that Masataka Yoshida could wind up requiring surgery on his injured left thumb.

Advice: There’s significant concern that Yoshida could wind up requiring an extended absence as the Red Sox continue gathering medical information after he landed on the injured list earlier this week with a left thumb strain. The 30-year-old slugger, who has transitioned to designated hitter almost exclusively this season, underwent an MRI earlier this week and the club has declined to provide an update on his status. There should be some clarity on whether he’ll require surgery at some point later this week. Rotoworld 45 minutes ago

  • Adrian Houser allows four over five vs. Cubs
Adrian Houser allowed four runs in five innings of work in a no-decision Thursday against the Cubs.

Advice: Houser gave up four hits, and he also issued four free passes with two strikeouts before leaving. The right-hander was a smidgen better then his awful start Saturday against the Cardinals (six runs in 4 1/3 innings), but it’s still an ineffective outing that sees his ERA sit at an unideal 8.16 ERA. He’ll have a chance to lower that number in a rematch with St. Louis next week. Rotoworld 53 minutes ago

  • Ben Brown allows two runs, walks five against Mets
Ben Brown allowed two runs with five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings while not factoring into the decision Thursday against the Mets.

Advice: Brown did miss some bats Thursday, but he also caused a lot of batters not to swing with five walks. The right-hander was still able to keep the Mets off the board until the fifth, but that inning unraveled with a pair coming across before he exited. Brown has shown flashes of brilliance in his rookie campaign, and even this mediocre outing had moments that suggested a bright future. He’s back on the bump against the Padres next week. • Travis Jankowski plates two in win over Nationals
Travis Jankowski smacked a two-run single on Thursday, lifting the Rangers to a 6-0 victory over the Nationals.

Advice: Jankowski came off the bench and padded Texas’ late lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning. The 32-year-old veteran outfielder has played sparingly this season due to the Rangers’ tremendous position player depth, but he remains an extremely valuable bench component for the defending World Series champions. • Jorge Matero homers, plates two against Yankees
Jorge Mateo went 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBI against the Yankees on Thursday.

Advice: Mateo took Carlos Rodón deep — one of three homers the Orioles hit against the southpaw Thursday — and he now is the proud owner of his first homer of 2024. He also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Mateo needs to hit to stave off a plethora of quality prospects in Triple-A, and so far so good with a .268/.340/.488 slash across 41 at-bats. Rotoworld Today, 2:05 pm

  • Steven Matz (back) unlikely to make next start
Steven Matz (back) is unlikely to make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the White Sox.

Advice: The interesting wrinkle here is that the Cardinals decision to bump up Kyle Gibson and Miles Mikolas creates an opening on Tuesday against the Mets. The most likely candidate to fill that void would be pitching prospect Sem Robberse, who would be taking the ball on regular rest, and has been excellent this season for Triple-A Memphis. It’s a storyline worth monitoring this weekend. Rotoworld Today, 2:00 pm

  • Stallings swats three-run homer against Marlins
Jacob Stallings hit a three-run homer in an extra-inning loss to the Marlins on Thursday.

Advice: Stallings took Edward Cabrera deep in the second inning with a pair of runners on. The 34-year-old has his first homer as a member of the Rockies, and it comes against one of his former teams. Stallings hasn’t only received 29 at-bats, but he’s made the most of them with a .345/.429/.517 slash. Rotoworld Today, 1:58 pm
