    • Justin Verlander has started playing catch
      Astros general manager Dana Brown said Justin Verlander (neck) has resumed playing catch.

      Advice: The 41-year-old has been on the injured list since the middle of June with a neck issue, and the Astros have been tight-lipped about his recovery. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, “Verlander has deferred all questions to the team, which remains insistent this injury is just a neck issue,” but the team has said that he’ll need a prolonged buildup and then at least one rehab start, which means a return before the All-Star break feels unlikely.       Ryan allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks while striking out 10 over 5.2 innings Sunday against the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision.

      Advice: Ryan got through four innings unscathed while racking up eight of his 10 strikeouts over that span. He found himself in some immediate trouble in the fifth after allowing a leadoff triple and wound up surrendering two runs in the inning following a pair of base knocks and a fielding error. Sunday was Ryan's second double-digit strikeout performance this season and his second straight outing without walking a batter. He's given up two runs or less in four of his last five starts, though that's only amounted to one win.       Joe Ryan recorded 10 strikeouts and was charged with two runs (one earned) over 5 2/3 innings on Sunday in a no-decision against the Mariners.

      Advice: Ryan delivered an outstanding performance on Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Park, generating 16 swinging strikes - including 11 on his four-seam fastball alone - and finished with a near-elite 36 percent CSW. He gave up six hits and didn’t hand out a free pass, although he did hit a pair of batters as well. The 28-year-old upper-echelon fantasy contributor recorded his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season and will aim to keep the momentum going when he faces the Astros on Saturday in his penultimate outing prior to the All-Star break.     • Notches eight strikeouts in win
      Peralta (6-4) picked up the win Sunday against the Cubs, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven innings.

      Advice: Peralta yielded a solo home run to Nico Hoerner in the opening frame, but the 28-year-old was locked in afterwards, yielding just one other hit to notch his seventh quality start of the season. The right-hander has shown an impressive ability to miss bats, registering an 11.6 K/9 that ranks in the 95th percentile. Despite the lofty strikeout totals, Peralta has been mildly disappointing this season, logging a pedestrian 3.83 ERA and 1.13 WHIP across 94 innings.       Astros general manager Dana Brown said Sunday that Verlander (neck) resumed playing catch from 60 feet Sunday and "felt good," Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: The 41-year-old's return to throwing is an encouraging development after he was shut down for a bit while recovering from neck soreness. Given the prolonged shutdown period, Verlander shouldn't be expected to return from the injured list when first eligible this week and will likely need to make a minor-league rehab start prior to being activated.     • Peralta strikes out eight, picks up sixth win
      Freddy Peralta allowed one run in seven innings and got the win in the Brewer’s 7-1 victory over the Cubs on Sunday.

      Advice: Peralta gave up two hits, walked two and struck out eight. It was his sixth win of the season and third in June. Peralta has completed at least six innings and struck out eight batters in two of his last three starts. That’s a real positive considering that before that stretch he had completed six innings in just one of his previous six starts. Peralta has a 3.83 ERA on the season. The 28-year-old right-hander has a tough matchup against the Dodgers on the road next weekend.

    • Pitches well in losing effort
      Miller (6-7) took the loss against the Twins on Saturday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out six.

      Advice: Miller was tagged for runs in the second and fourth innings on three doubles and a single, though the right-hander pitched well outside of those frames while generating 14 whiffs on the night. He also didn't surrender a home run for the third time in his last four starts and fanned six batters in three of his six starts this month. Despite the solid outing, Miller was charged with his seventh loss Saturday and has now lost two straight after previously winning three decisions in a row (over five starts).     • Hit hard by Guardians
      Ragans (5-6) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs on six hits and a walk over 4.2 innings as the Royals were downed 7-2 by the Guardians. He struck out six.

      Advice: The big blow off the southpaw was a two-run blast by rookie Jhonkensy Noel in the fourth inning, but Ragans also got tagged for doubles by Josh Naylor and Jose Ramirez, with the latter chasing him from the game in the fifth after 93 pitches (52 strikes). Ragans hadn't given up more than three runs in a start since May 11, and he'll take a 3.33 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 126:34 K:BB through 102.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next weekend in Colorado.     • Bryce Miller strikes out six in loss to Twins
      Bryce Miller was charged with two runs over five innings on Saturday in a loss to the Twins.

      Advice: Miller was simply outdueled by Twins ace Pablo López in this one as he gave up run-scoring hits to Jose Miranda and Byron Buxton in the second and fourth innings, respectively, which were enough to saddle him with a loss in a low-scoring affair at T-Mobile Park. He struck out six and only handed out one free pass. The 25-year-old righty has been pretty consistent this season for fantasy managers with a solid 3.88 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 91/28 K/BB ratio across 97 1/3 innings (17 starts).
