    • Eflin goes seven, allows four in loss to Pirates
      Zach Eflin allowed four runs in seven innings and got the loss against the Pirates on Saturday.



      Advice: Eflin gave up five hits, walked one and struck out six. This was the longest of Eflin’s four starts since coming off the injured list and his second start in a row with at least six strikeouts. His ERA on the season is now 4.20. It’s safe to say Eflin hasn’t been able to repeat his breakout season last year when he won 16 games with a 3.50 ERA. The 30-year-old right-hander is set to face the Nationals at home next weekend.

    • Zach Eflin gives up four over seven against PIT
      Zach Eflin gave up four runs in seven innings while being charged with a loss Saturday to the Pirates.

      Advice: Eflin struck out six while issuing one walk. The 30-year-old right-hander gave up a long homer to Oneil Cruz in the first, and then gave up three runs in the third before settling down nicely. It was far from an abhorrent start, but Jared Jones was the better starter Saturday afternoon. Eflin now has a 4.20 ERA and (much more impressive) 63/6 K/BB through his 81 1/3 innings.     • Takes step toward return
      Musgrove (elbow) lightly threw weighted plyometric balls Thursday, MLB.com reports.

      Advice: A previous report indicated Musgrove could play catch around the middle of the week, but it turns out the extent of his throwing was the work he did with the plyo balls. The workout was, however, a step in his progression toward playing catch, which could happen before the end of the month. Musgrove doesn't seem close to taking part in a rehab assignment and isn't likely to be activated off the 15-day injured list until after the All-Star break. Rotowire.com Saturday, 12:38 pm

    • Early exit in no-decision
      Pepiot came away with a no-decision in Friday's 10-3 win over the Pirates, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out three.

      Advice: Despite the impressive offensive support, Pepiot wasn't efficient enough to qualify for his fifth win of the year and got the hook after 74 pitches (41 strikes). The right-hander tied his season high with the four free passes, while the three strikeouts tied his season low. Through four starts in June, he's stumbled to a 6.30 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB through 20 innings, and Friday's outing was his first this month in which he didn't serve up a homer.       Estevez struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Dodgers.

      Advice: Estevez has not put a runner on base over his last eight innings, striking out eight and earning seven saves and a win in that span. A groundout moved the phantom runner to third base in the 10th inning, but Estevez struck out the next two batters to protect the one-run lead. He's 14-for-17 in save chances with a 3.38 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 25:3 K:BB over 24 innings. This is arguably the best Estevez has ever looked in the majors, which will boost his trade value, though he's unlikely to be the primary closer on a contender if a deal comes to fruition.     • Carlos Estévez gets save against Dodgers
      Carlos Estévez struck out two while picking up a save in a scoreless inning of work against the Dodgers on Friday.

      Advice: Estévez has been one of the few bright spots for the Angels this year, and now has 14 saves on the season and a 3.38 ERA. With Los Angeles nowhere near contention for a postseason spot, it would seem likely that the 31-year-old is pitching for a new team before August.     • Ryan Pepiot unravels in fourth inning
      Ryan Pepiot allowed two earned runs in 3 1/3 on Friday against the Pirates. He walked four and struck out three.

      Advice: Pepiot started strong with three punch outs in his first three innings and held a big lead. He looked to be in complete control until a lead-off walk to Rowdy Tellez in the bottom of the fourth and wouldn’t make it through the inning. His line could’ve been worse as he left the game with the bases loaded and one out, but Colin Poche got out of the jam with a double-play ball. It seemed he didn’t have a feel for his slider in this one as he threw just three. That pitch has been a difference-maker for him this season and it would be a concern if he took it out of his repertoire going forward. Rotoworld Friday, 6:29 pm

      Ragans (4-5) allowed two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out seven over six innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Athletics.

      Advice: Ragans rattled off his fourth straight quality start, but he's still winless over his last five outings. The four walks were a season high for the southpaw, but it was still a decent performance for him despite the end result. He's maintained a 3.13 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 109:30 K:BB through 92 innings over 16 starts this season. Ragans is projected to make his next start at home versus the Marlins in a favorable matchup. Ryan recorded his third straight quality start and his 11th of the season, which is tied for fifth in the majors.
