  • Cubs to start Hayden Wesneski on Wednesday
    The Cubs will have Hayden Wesneski start Wednesday against the Giants.

    Advice: It’ll be Hayden versus Hayden (Birdsong, the Giants’ pitcher making his MLB debut). Wesneski hasn’t thrown more than two innings since May 13, so this won’t be a particularly long start, especially if he doesn’t perform better than he has lately; he’s given up six runs and four homers over 7 1/3 innings in his last six appearances.   • Adam Mazur records first major league victory
    Despite going without a strikeout, Adam Mazur recorded his first major league victory Tuesday after allowing four runs in five innings versus the Nationals.

    Advice: The Padres nearly became just the second team since 2017 to win a nine-inning game with no strikeouts, but Robert Suarez ruined things by punching out Ildemaro Vargas in the ninth. As is, the 2023 Brewers are the only team to do it in seven seasons, having beaten the Blue Jays with no strikeouts in a Julio Teherán start last May. Mazur will probably return to the minors now; he was only recalled Monday because of Yu Darvish’s setback, and the Padres aren’t going to need a fifth starter again until July 6.   • Robert Suarez picks up 20th save for Padres
    Robert Suarez recorded his 20th save after allowing an unearned run in the ninth Tuesday against the Nationals.

    Advice: When Suarez fanned Ildemaro Vargas to begin the ninth, it was actually the Padres’ first strikeout of the night. Suarez went on to allow a run on an error and a single before getting Lane Thomas to pop out to end the game. Rotoworld 51 minutes ago
     
  • MacKenzie Gore gives up five runs, loses to Padres
    MacKenzie Gore surrendered five runs in five innings Tuesday in a loss to the Padres.

    Advice: Gore was lucky not to be tossed at the beginning of this one, as he hit Jurickson Profar in the back leg with a pitch right after warnings were issued because of some thoroughly unnecessary jawing and a benches-clearing incident. Gore’s pitch, though, didn’t seem to be intentional. It did lead to an ejection anyway, as Padres manager Mike Shildt was ejected for taking issue with Gore not being tossed. Gore was a bit of a mess afterwards, walking three and striking out just one in the loss. Still, it’s probably not anything to worry about. Rotoworld 51 minutes ago
     
  • Surrenders four runs
    Ryan allowed four runs on six hits and struck out five without walking a batter over six innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks.

    Advice: Ryan's run of three straight quality starts came to a close, as Arizona got to him early Tuesday. All four runs on his line were surrendered over the first two innings, though he was able to settle down and exit at 86 pitches (58 strikes). This was the fourth time in 2024 that Ryan avoided walking a batter. He's now at a 3.31 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 100:15 K:BB over 98 innings through 16 starts.   • Set for MRI on sore shoulder
    Canterino was shut down from throwing due to shoulder pain and is set for an MRI next week, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

    Advice: Canterino missed all of 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He returned for spring training but suffered a rotator cuff strain in mid-March. He had recently started throwing and working his way back, but could face a significant setback. Rotowire.com Today, 10:01 pm

    Sewald allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Twins.

    Advice: Sewald needed 17 pitches (nine strikes) to close out this contest, earning his 10th save in as many chances this year. He's on a 13.2-inning scoreless streak -- the only run he's allowed this year came in his season debut after he started the year on the injured list.     Pfaadt allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 6.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Tuesday.

    Advice: Pfaadt pitched into the seventh inning for the second start in a row, but it resulted in him giving up a three-run home run to Ryan Jeffers that tied the game at 4-4. Arizona got the lead back in its half of the frame, but Pfaadt was already out of the game, leaving the win to reliever Kevin Ginkel. Through five starts in June, Pfaadt has allowed 17 runs over 30 innings with a 23:12 K:BB. He's now at a 4.45 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 86:24 K:BB through 97 innings through 16 starts this season.     Topa (left patellar tear) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session next week, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

    Advice: The right-hander was diagnosed with a small tear in the patellar tendon of his left knee in mid-May. It's his first sign of progress since the injury and he likely has several more weeks of throwing before he can begin a rehab assignment. He could return in late July if all goes well.
