    • Taking BP from left side
Edman (wrist) has been cleared to take batting practice from the left side of the plate, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Advice: It's the first time the switch-hitter has taken BP from the left side since he experienced complications in his recovery from right wrist surgery. While the step is an important one, Edman does not appear close to beginning a rehab assignment just yet. Rotowire.com 41 minutes ago

    • Could re-enter rotation
Francis (forearm) is one of the options the Blue Jays are considering as the rotation replacement for Alek Manoah (elbow), Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Advice: Francis struck out five while yielding one unearned run over 3.2 innings with Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday in what was likely his final rehab appearance. The righty has been sidelined since late April with forearm tendinitis. Francis holds a 12.96 ERA in two starts and 2.84 ERA in three relief appearances with the Jays this season. Toronto is also considering a bullpen game for Manoah's next turn, which comes up early next week. Rotowire.com 50 minutes ago

    • Tyler Wells to undergo season-ending surgery
Orioles’ general manager Mike Elias announced Friday that Tyler Wells will undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow.

Advice: In a brutal blow to the Orioles’ pitching depth, Elias announced that both Wells and John Means would undergo operations to repair their UCL’s. It’s not clear if that will be Tommy John surgery or the internal brace procedure, but both hurlers are going to miss the remainder of the 2024 season and the start of the 2025 campaign as well while recovering. The Orioles will now rely more heavily on Albert Suarez and Cole Irvin in the rotation for the remainder of the season. Rotoworld 51 minutes ago

    • Needs UCL surgery
Orioles GM Mike Elias announced Friday that Means will undergo surgery to repair the UCL in his left elbow and will miss the rest of the season, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The left-hander headed for a second opinion after being diagnosed with a forearm strain last week, and he'll end up having a third straight injury-shortened campaign. It remains to be seen if Means will require a Tommy John surgery -- which he also underwent in April 2022 -- or a lesser procedure, but his absence is likely to push in 2025 regardless. It's a rough day for the Orioles rotation, as Tyler Wells (elbow) will also require UCL surgery. Rotowire.com 52 minutes ago

    • John Maans to undergo season-ending elbow surgery
Orioles’ general manager Mike Elias told reporters on Friday that left-hander John Means will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the UCL in his left elbow.

Advice: Oof. It’s unclear if Means will undergo another Tommy John surgery, or if he’ll have the internal brace procedure done, but either way he’ll miss the rest of the 2024 campaign and at least the start of the 2025 season while recovering. It’s just a brutal blow for the 31-year-old southpaw who worked so hard to come back from his last operation. Rotoworld 53 minutes ago

    • Scheduled for BP
Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Yoshida (thumb) is expected to take batting practice Saturday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Yoshida began hitting off a tee Friday and will take his next step toward returning from a strained left thumb. A timetable for return has yet to be established, but Yoshida seems to be well on his way to reinstatement. Rotowire.com 57 minutes ago

    • Sitting out Friday
Bouchard is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Dodgers.

Advice: Bouchard had started each of the last four contests in left field, but he will begin the series opener against the Dodgers on the bench. Jake Cave is getting the call in left field for this one. Rotowire.com Today, 1:14 pm
    • Athletics outright Nevin to Triple-A
Athletics outright 3B Tyler Nevin to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Advice: Nevin was designated for assignment on Tuesday and cleared waivers. He hit .220 with four home runs in 40 games for the Athletics. Nevin slumped badly in May going 3-for-47 (.064) with one home run. He’ll look to get his bat going again in Triple-A. Rotoworld Today, 1:00 pm

    • Idle Friday
Baez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Red Sox.

Advice: Baez is 1-for-15 across his last four starts and will give way to Zach McKinstry on Friday. McKinstry will bat eighth and play shortstop with Tanner Houck on the bump for Boston. Rotowire.com Today, 12:57 pm
