• Nestor Cortes strikes out eight Red Sox
Nestor Cortes allowed just one run in six innings against the Red Sox on Friday. He struck out eight and walked one in a no-decision.

Advice: Cortes carved the Red Sox up in this one. His fastball and sweeper each induced six swings-and-misses as those two pitches along with his cutter rendered the Sox’s bats powerless. The quality start was Cortes’ ninth of the season as he’s led a fantastic bounce-back campaign. Rotoworld Today, 8:06 pm

  • Strikes out eight in win
Skenes (5-0) earned the win against the Mets on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over seven innings.

Advice: Skenes surrendered a solo home run in the third inning and another run in the fourth but was otherwise fantastic. According to The Athletic, he is the first pitcher in major-league history to record seven or more strikeouts in nine of his first 10 career starts. The rookie has not lost a game this season and owns a 2.12 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 78:12 K:BB over 59.1 innings. He lines up for a road matchup with the Brewers next week. • Paul Skenes strikes out eight Mets in win
Paul Skenes allowed two earned runs across seven innings on Friday in the Pirates’ lopsided 14-2 win over the Mets. He struck out eight and walked two en route to the win.

Advice: Skenes got better as this game went on. He retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced and the one that reached was an infield single where Jose Iglesias was ruled out on the field before it was reviewed. He threw nearly the same number of fastballs and splinkers in this game, the third straight start he mixed them virtually evenly. He also threw his slider 23% of the time. That was the first time he’s thrown it that often since May 29th. Alone, all three of those pitches are awesome. Together with his velocity and command makes him one of the best pitchers in baseball. • Making rehab appearance Saturday
Garcia (elbow) will pitch for Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Garcia isn't expected to require more than two rehab appearances, with Saturday's outing his first with Buffalo. With Jordan Romano (elbow) out for the foreseeable future, Garcia could step into the Blue Jays' closing role once activated from the IL. Rotowire.com Today, 5:03 pm

  • Justin Steele throws complete game for first win
Justin Steele went the distance for his first win of 2024, pitching a two-hitting in a 5-1 game against the Angels.

Advice: The Cubs didn’t need to turn to their shaky pen this time out, as Steele finished off the Angels in just 95 pitches. He struck out seven and walked two for his first win in 13 starts this season and 18 outings dating back to last year, when he opened up 16-3 before going 0-2 in his final four turns and perhaps costing himself a Cy Young Award. Of course, it was hardly his fault that he was 0-3 this year coming into this one. His ERA stands at 2.95 after this one. Rotoworld Today, 2:32 pm

  • Set to return Tuesday
Schwarber (groin) is expected to be activated off the injured list ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Dodgers, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Schwarber has been working through drills at 90 percent intensity, per Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia, and the 31-year-old slugger will run the bases Saturday in what is the last step in his rehab program before rejoining the team. Schwarber is slashing .250/.373/447 with 17 home runs, 49 RBI and a .820 OPS over 367 plate appearances this season. Rotowire.com Today, 2:18 pm

  • Throws complete game for first win
Steele (1-3) earned the win against the Angels on Friday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over nine innings.

Advice: Steele needed just 95 pitches to toss his first career complete game. The only blemish was an RBI single by Taylor Ward in the fifth, but the lefty responded by retiring 13 consecutive batters to seal his much overdue first win of the year. The 29-year-old has logged six straight quality starts and owns a 2.95 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 77:18 K:BB over 79.1 innings this season. He lines up for a road matchup with the Orioles next week. • Not in Atlanta lineup
Murphy is not in the lineup for Friday's contest versus the Phillies.

Advice: Travis d'Arnaud will do the catching for Max Fried in the series opener. Murphy has a 1.050 OPS over his last 12 games and would seem to be a good bet to be in the lineup Saturday and Sunday. Rotowire.com Today, 12:22 pm

  • Begins rehab assignment
Bogaerts (shoulder) went 1-for-3 with a walk in his first rehab game with Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.

Advice: Bogaerts is expected to require 7-to-10 days on his rehab assignment, so he could be back just before the All-Star break if all goes well. The veteran infielder has been sidelined since late May with a fractured left shoulder. Rotowire.com Today, 6:14 am
