    Kopech struck out one while not allowing a hit or a walk during the ninth inning Thursday to pick up the save against Atlanta.

    Advice: A fielding error is all that prevented a 1-2-3 outing from Kopech, who collected his first save since May 15 after having blown his previous three opportunities. Kopech carries an impressive K/9 rate of 13.0, collecting 48 strikeouts over 33.1 innings. However, he's also allowed 48 batters to reach base (1.44 WHIP), including allowing 1.9 homers and 5.1 walks per nine innings. Kopech is a piece the White Sox will strongly consider selling at the trade deadline and will look for more performances like he provided Thursday to help them maximize the return they might get for him.     Michael Kopech pitched a scoreless ninth to get a save Thursday against Atlanta.

    Advice: Kopech didn’t allow a hit while picking up a strikeout. That’s the sixth save of the season for the 28-year-old, and the scoreless frame lowered his ERA to a still-shaky 4.59 on the 2024 season.     Jake Bloss (shoulder) has resumed throwing.

  • Guardians ink Matthew Boyd to deal
    According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Guardians have signed LHP Matthew Boyd to a major league deal, pending a physical.

    Advice: The Boyd Boys are back in business. The left-hander held a showcase with 17 teams on June 8th when he was a little over 11 months removed from Tommy John surgery. He was reportedly sitting 92-93 with his fastball, which was enough to win over the Guardians. The 33-year-old was 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA in 15 starts for the Tigers last season before undergoing surgery, and will almost certainly require a handful of rehab starts before he threatens to take the job of anybody in the Guardians’ rotation.   • Finds work with Cleveland
    Boyd (elbow) agreed to terms on a contract with the Guardians on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

    Advice: It's unclear how much more rehab work Boyd has to do after undergoing Tommy John surgery last June, but the Guardians seem comfortable enough with his progress to bring him in on a major-league deal.     Gallen (hamstring) could be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Saturday against Oakland if he recovers well from Thursday's bullpen session, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

    Advice: Thursday's bullpen session will be the second one thrown by Gallen, who also has a couple of simulated games under his belt since he landed on the injured list.     Knack is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Giants in San Francisco, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

    Advice: Due to off days Thursday and next Monday, the Dodgers could have gotten by with a four-man rotation until next weekend, but Knack will earn another turn as Los Angeles' No. 5 starter coming off a solid showing in his return to the big club last week. After being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City last Friday, Knack tossed five scoreless innings while taking a no-decision against the Angels.     Bloss (shoulder) was spotted playing catch on the field Wednesday prior to the Astros' game against the Rockies, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

    Advice: The Astros had initially planned for Bloss to resume playing catch Friday, but he was able to perform the activity a little sooner than expected. He indicated that all was fine with his right shoulder following the workout, but the real test for Bloss will come once he gets back on the mound and throws at full velocity.     Jared Koenig picked up his seventh win in relief after throwing a scoreless 10th Wednesday against the Rangers.

    Advice: Koenig is the Brewers’ win leader even though he didn’t debut until Apr. 15, and he’s been burned as an opener three times, ruling out the possibility of anything aside from a loss.
