    Advice: The lefty-hitting Gordon usually exits the lineup when the Marlins oppose southpaws, but he'll hit the bench Thursday with a right-hander (Peter Lambert) taking the hill for Colorado. Gordon's move to the bench comes while he's gone 2-for-30 at the dish over his last 10 games, dropping his batting average to .167 for the season. Dane Myers will get the start in left field Thursday, and he could soon displace Gordon as the Marlins' preferred option at the position if Gordon's struggles at the dish continue.     Advice: Valdez will head back to the minors to make room on the roster for infielder Zack Short, who was acquired via trade Wednesday and has now been added to the 26-man active roster. The 25-year-old has slashed just .156/.186/.267 across 28 games with the big club this season.     Toro went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Pirates.

    Advice: Getting the start at second base and batting fifth, Toro launched a second-inning Quinn Priester sinker up in the zone off the top of the wall in center field. Toro has hit safely in six straight games, and he's making a case to be an everyday player for Oakland -- through 99 plate appearances, he's slashing .264/.323/.440 with three homers, 11 RBI and 11 runs. He's played at least three games at first base, second base and third base so far in 2024 in addition to spotting in at DH, and while Ryan Noda's demotion to Triple-A after Wednesday's game likely has more to do with J.D.
