    • Mitch Spence to start for Athletics on Friday
      Athletics’ manager Mark Kotsay told reporters that Mitch Spence will start on Friday night against the Royals in Kansas City.

      Advice: Kotsay noted that for now, it’s just a one-start thing, but that if Spence pitches well he could secure a spot in the team’s rotation. The 26-year-old Rule-5 pick has registered a 4.26 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 22/7 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings in 11 appearances with the A’s this season. He threw 72 pitches against the Marlins on May 5, so he may be able to work deep enough into Friday’s outing to earn a victory if the A’s offense provides enough support.       Spence will start Friday in Kansas City, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: It will be the first major-league start for Spence, who has posted a 4.26 ERA and 22:7 K:BB over 25.1 innings covering 11 relief appearances. The Rule 5 pick will be pitching on three days' rest after allowing two runs over two-thirds of an inning on Monday in Houston. Spence has gone three-plus frames in six of his appearances, which includes a season-long 4.2-inning outing on May 5 versus the Marlins.       Alvarado (1-2) took the loss during Thursday's 11-inning 6-5 loss to the Mets, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and no walks across one inning. He struck out two.

      Advice: Alvarado didn't take the mound until the 11th frame, when the score was knotted up at four, and ended up with the loss. He allowed a single to JD Martinez to open up the inning -- scoring designated runner Francisco Lindor -- before Harrison Bader doubled to put two runners aboard. Alvarado managed to retire the next three batters he faced; however, Martinez crossed home plate on a wild pitch to put the Mets up two.     • Ryan Helsey records 13th save in win over Angels
      Ryan Helsley recorded his 13th save with a scoreless ninth against the Angels on Tuesday.

      Advice: Helsley pitched a whole lot during April, but it definitely hasn’t caused any problems yet; he’s posted his best velocity numbers of the year his last two times out, averaging 101.0 mph with his fastball on Sunday and 100.7 mph tonight. He’s gone 14 straight appearances without allowing an earned run and the one unearned run he’s given up during the stretch was an automatic runner in the 10th inning.       Helsley allowed a hit and struck out two without walking a batter in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Angels.

      Advice: Helsley has a win and six saves during his nine-inning scoreless streak, a span that's seen him allowed six hits and one walk while striking out 11. The right-hander is 13-for-14 in save chances this season with a 1.35 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 23:2 K:BB over 20 innings. Helsley seems to be benefiting from being the standalone closer as opposed to part of a committee.       Crawford (2-2) suffered the loss Monday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over six innings against the Rays. He struck out six.

      Advice: Crawford did not allow a long ball after having allowed one each over his past two starts (none over his first six outings) but did serve up three extra-base hits on his way to allowing four earned runs for the first time this season. A two-out triple in the first inning by Amed Rosario was the biggest blow while a fourth inning double by Jose Caballero set up Tampa's fourth run and ultimately served as the deciding run that sent Crawford to his second defeat. Despite the relatively subpar effort, Crawford maintains a high-quality 2.24 ERA that he'll take into his next start, tentatively slated to take place over the weekend when the Red Sox head to St. Louis for an inter-league matchup against the Cardinals.       Alvarado picked up the save Monday against the Mets. He pitched a clean inning with no strikeouts.

      Advice: Alvarado collected his first save since May 5 on Monday night, requiring just nine pitches to retire the Mets in the tenth inning. Outside of yielding five runs on Opening Day, the 28-year-old lefty has been a stalwart, firing a 1.06 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB over 17 innings since then.       José Alvarado tossed a scoreless 10th inning on Monday against the Mets to notch his eighth save of the season.

      Advice: Alvarado got the call to guard a one-run lead in the 10th inning after the Phillies finally pulled ahead and needed just nine pitches (seven strikes) to end it. The hard-throwing 28-year-old stopper has converted all eight of his save chances this season to go along with a solid 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 16/7 K/BB ratio across 17 2/3 innings (19 appearances).       Kutter Crawford was charged with four runs over six innings on Monday in a loss to the Rays.

      Advice: Crawford struck out six and only issued one walk. He got into trouble right away with two outs in the opening frame when he gave up a two-run triple to Amed Rosario and a run-scoring single to Richie Palacios. A fourth-inning sacrifice fly from Jose Siri was enough to saddle him with a loss in a low-scoring showdown at Fenway Park. He’ll bring a strong 2.24 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 52/16 K/BB ratio across 52 1/3 innings (nine starts) into a road tilt on Saturday against the Cardinals. Rotoworld Monday, 7:15 pm
