      Criswell didn't factor into the decision Thursday against Tampa Bay, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks across 3.2 innings. He struck out three.

      Advice: Criswell set season worst run and earned run totals Thursday and gave up a home run for a third straight start. The long ball came in the third inning off the bat of Josh Lowe and plated Jose Siri. Despite Thursday's hiccup, Criswell owns a 2.76 ERA and a 28:7 K:BB through 29.1 innings, an impressive showing for his first extended stretch as a starter. Although he's been a solid fill-in option for the Sox, Criswell will likely be the odd man out once Garrett Whitlock (oblique) returns from the IL -- which could be as soon as May 20.       Cooper Criswell allowed five runs (three earned) in 3 2/3 innings in the Red Sox’ loss to the Rays on Thursday.



      Advice: Criswell was coming off his best start of the year in which he recorded nine strikeouts. He followed that up with his shortest start of the season and only three strikeouts. Criswell doesn’t work deep into games, but his ERA is still just 2.76 on the season. The 27-year-old journeyman right-hander is set to face the Rays on the road in his next start.

    • Javier Assad cruises through six to beat Braves
      Javier Assad continued his strong season with six scoreless innings in the Cubs’ 7-1 victory in Atlanta. He struck out seven, allowed four hits, and just one walk earning the win.

      Advice: Unfazed by the Braves’ daunting lineup, Assad was in complete control in this one. Only one runner reached scoring position and he lowered his ERA to a sparkling 1.49, good for the fourth-lowest among all starting pitchers. He’s lined up for a rematch with the Braves on Monday.     • Continues to shine as starter
      Assad (4-0) tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win Wednesday against Atlanta. He allowed four hits and a walk, while striking out seven.

      Advice: Assad has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in all nine of his starts this season, which has allowed him to compile a stellar 1.49 ERA across 48.1 innings. The young righty was effective as a long reliever last year and it was uncertain in spring training if he'd be able to grab a rotation spot, but at this point, it would seem unlikely that he's moved back to the bullpen given his strong play.       Lopez (back) is slated to start Sunday's game against the Padres in Atlanta, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

      Advice: The right-hander dealt with back tightness in his most recent start Monday against the Cubs and was lifted after five scoreless innings, but he's apparently feeling better two days later. Assuming he's able to make it out of his between-starts bullpen session without incident, Lopez shouldn't face any major workload restrictions when he toes the rubber Sunday. After spending most of the last two seasons as a reliever, Lopez has exceeded expectations with his move to a starting role in his first year in Atlanta, going 2-1 with a 1.34 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 40:16 K:BB in 40.1 innings through his first seven outings.       Hicks allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out four without walking a batter over five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Monday.

      Advice: Hicks wasn't particularly efficient Monday, throwing 56 of 93 pitches for strikes. He's failed to get past the fifth inning in all three of his starts in May after doing so in three of his first six outings of the year. The right-hander has pitched to a steady 2.44 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 39:16 K:BB through 48 innings this season.       Reynaldo López tossed five scoreless innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Cubs.

      Advice: López certainly would’ve gone deeper into the contest, but he was lifted for precautionary reasons following just 71 pitches (50 strikes) after his back tightened up on him. It doesn’t sound like a serious concern with Braves manager Brian Snitker telling reporters afterwards that he doesn’t expect him to miss his next start. The 30-year-old righty will bring a stellar 1.34 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 40/16 K/BB ratio across 40 1/3 innings (seven starts) into a home outing on Sunday against the Padres.       Lopez was lifted from Monday's start against the Cubs early due to back tightness, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. He didn't factor into the decision after allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four over five scoreless innings.

      Advice: Lopez was removed from the game firing 71 pitches, and he likely would've gone back out for the sixth had his back not become an issue.
