  • Michael King hurls five scoreless to beat D-backs
    Michael King struck out five over five shutout innings on Friday in a win over the Diamondbacks.

    Advice: King received double-digit run support from San Diego’s offense and was able to cruise to a relatively easy win, scattering four hits and one walk over five spotless frames. The 29-year-old righty has been phenomenal of late, allowing three earned runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts since May 4. He’ll carry a sharp 3.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 83/32 K/BB ratio across 78 innings (14 appearances, 13 starts) into an extremely favorable matchup on Wednesday afternoon against the rebuilding Athletics.   • Logs steal in win
    Merrill went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 10-3 win over the Diamondbacks.

    Advice: This was Merrill's first steal since May 14. Over the 20 contests between thefts, he hit a meager .224 (15-for-67) with no walks and just one extra-base hit. The 21-year-old still has a respectable .268/.303/.344 slash line with three home runs, 22 RBI, 24 runs scored and eight steals over 63 contests this year. Merrill has been benched against some left-handed pitchers recently, but he should have no trouble maintaining a majority of the playing time in center field over Jose Azocar.     Advice: King wasn't all that efficient, needing 98 pitches (63 strikes) to get through five frames, but that's the only knock on his performance. He's been excellent over his last three starts, allowing just two runs on 11 hits and four walks with 16 strikeouts over his last 17 innings. King has a 3.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 83:32 K:BB through 78 innings across 14 appearances (13 starts).     Advice: The home run was Joe’s seventh of the year. He’s up to .270 with a .792 OPS on the season. While he’s seen regular playing time this year, he’s certainly proven to be better against left-handed pitching once again.     Advice: Machado sustained a mild right hip flexor strain Wednesday against the Angels, and the 31-year-old will sit again Friday. While he didn't start in the series opener against Arizona on Thursday, Machado did pinch hit for Kyle Higashioka in the eighth inning and grounded out to the pitcher.
