      Advice: Irvin will start on regular rest, so it's not particularly notable that he will take the ball for Baltimore on Friday. However, that also moves Kyle Bradish back at least one more game, giving him multiple extra days of rest after Cade Povich took Bradish's original turn Thursday.       Cole Irvin will start Friday’s series opener against the Rays.

      Advice: Irvin will take the ball in place of Kyle Bradish, who is getting a couple extra days of rest as the Orioles manage his workload after dealing with an offseason elbow issue.       Garrett (2-1) took the loss Wednesday against Tampa Bay, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk across 2.2 innings. He struck out three.

      Advice: Garrett seemed to have turned a corner after yielding 11 runs over his first two starts of 2024 by allowing just one run over 14.0 innings in his ensuing pair of starts. However, he couldn't keep his recent form, surrendering three doubles and failing to make it through three innings for the first time this year.       Eflin didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Marlins, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks across four innings. He struck out three.

      Advice: Eflin was activated from the 15-day IL for Wednesday's start and was yanked after 55 pitches. He was expected to be under a pitch count after being stretched out to only 40 pitches during his recovery from a back injury. The 30-year-old had to shake off a little rust, allowing all three hits and both runs in the first inning before retiring nine straight batters to close out the start.       Ohtani went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run during Wednesday's 10-6 loss to the Pirates.

      Advice: Ohtani plated Mookie Betts in the second inning on a 415-foot homer off Paul Skenes. While Ohtani isn't quite hitting with the power he did a season ago, he owns a .322 batting average -- which would be a career best if it stands.     • Zach Eflin goes four innings in return from IL
      Zach Eflin pitched well in his return from the injured list on Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits over four frames in a no-decision against the Marlins.

      Advice: Eflin struck out three batters on the evening and didn’t allow a base on balls. The Marlins scored a pair of two-out runs against him in the opening inning on an RBI double by Jesus Sanchez and an RBI single by Otto Lopez. He settled in nicely afterwards though and blanked the Fish over his final three innings. The 30-year-old hurler got five whiffs on 55 pitches in the contest, posting a CSW of only 18 percent.     • Braxton Garrett pummeled in loss to Rays
      Braxton Garrett was pummeled in Wednesday’s loss to the Rays, giving up five runs on six hits across his 2 2/3 innings of work.

      Advice: The 26-year-old southpaw punched out three batters on the night while issuing one free pass. The Rays jumped on him for three runs in the opening inning on RBI doubles by Isaac Paredes and Josh Lowe. They then pushed across another pair while chasing Garrett in the third inning. He got nine swings and misses on just 53 pitches in the ballgame — five on his slider — while posting a strong CSW of 34 percent. He’ll attempt to improve upon his uninspiring 5.81 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 24/4 K/BB ratio (26 1/3 innings) when he takes on the Mets in New York on Wednesday. Rotoworld Wednesday, 6:03 pm
       
    • Jack Flaherty (back) confident he’ll make next start
      Jack Flaherty (back) told reporters on Wednesday that he’s confident he’ll make his next scheduled start on Tuesday against the Nationals.

      Advice: While most players express optimism in all injury situations, it’s at least encouraging that he hasn’t been placed on the injured list as of yet. The 28-year-old hurler was pulled from Tuesday’s outing against the Rangers after just 60 pitches due to tightness in his back. Flaherty did say that he still felt some stiffness in his back on Wednesday, but that it’s improved from where he was on Tuesday.       The Rays reinstated Eflin (back) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Marlins in Miami.

      Advice: Tampa Bay optioned right-hander Justin Sterner to Triple-A Durham to clear the way for Eflin's return to the 26-man active roster. Eflin missed just over the minimum 15 days while recovering from lower-back inflammation, and the Rays signed off on him returning from the IL without a rehab assignment after he completed a 40-pitch, two-inning simulated bullpen session Sunday. According to MLB.com, manager Kevin Cash suggested that Eflin could face some limitations with his workload Wednesday, but the Rays will wait and see how the right-hander fares as the game unfolds before making any decisions on whether to cut his start short.
