    • Tigers option Keider Moreno back to Triple-A
Tigers optioned RHP Keider Moreno to Triple-A Toledo.

Advice: Moreno heads back to the minors after surrendering five runs over 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a spot start against the Phillies. The 23-year-old righty has struggled at the highest level, but he’s flashed an ability to miss bats with his slider in the big leagues. Rotoworld Today, 1:56 pm
    • Won't pitch in 2024
Ortega underwent season-ending surgery Wednesday to remove a bone spur in his right elbow, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Ortega underwent an operation during the offseason to remove loose bodies in the same elbow, and his most recent surgery will ensure that he misses the entire 2024 campaign. An exact recovery timeline has not been provided, but the 27-year-old right-hander will aim to return at some point next season. Rotowire.com Today, 10:53 am
    • Starts rehab assignment
Quijada (elbow) struck out the side in his first rehab appearance with the Angels' Arizona Complex League affiliate Wednesday.

Advice: It's a promising start as Quijada continues down the comeback trail from last May's Tommy John surgery. The left-hander will eventually move up to a higher affiliate and figures to need most, if not all, of the 30-day allotment for his rehab assignment. Rotowire.com Today, 6:27 am

    • Heads back to minors
The Pirates optioned Bruihl to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

Advice: Bruihl made one appearance during his most recent stint in the majors, allowing two runs while recording just one out. The Pirates are expected to activate Martin Perez (groin) from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move prior to Friday's series opener in Atlanta. Rotowire.com Today, 6:09 am
    • Plays catch Wednesday
Bloss (shoulder) was spotted playing catch on the field Wednesday prior to the Astros' game against the Rockies, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The Astros had initially planned for Bloss to resume playing catch Friday, but he was able to perform the activity a little sooner than expected. He indicated that all was fine with his right shoulder following the workout, but the real test for Bloss will come once he gets back on the mound and throws at full velocity. The rookie could play catch on a few more occasions before the Astros are comfortable clearing him for bullpen sessions. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 3:20 pm

    • Keider Montero hit hard by Phillies on Wednesday
Keider Montero was hit hard in a losing effort against the Phillies on Wednesday afternoon, giving up five runs on five hits over his 4 1/3 innings of work.

Advice: The 23-year-old hurler walked three while racking up six strikeouts on the afternoon. Brandon Marsh did most of the damage against him, crushing a two-run homer in the fourth inning and adding a two-run single in the fifth. It wasn’t all bat for Montero though, as he generated a whopping 18 swings and misses on 94 pitches on the afternoon — nine of those on his slider — while registering a CSW of 28 percent. It’s highly likely that Montero will head back to Triple-A Toledo following this spot start. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:42 pm
    • Set to start Thursday
Daniel will be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to start Thursday's game against the Tigers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Advice: Other than a one-day stay with the Halos in mid-May in which he didn't make an appearance, Daniel has spent the entire season at Salt Lake, posting an ugly 5.33 ERA but a more promising 82:25 K:BB across 76 innings covering 14 starts. The 27-year-old right-hander appeared in three games out of the Angels bullpen in 2023, allowing three runs with a 9:9 K:BB over 12.1 frames. With Patrick Sandoval (elbow) out for the season and Jose Soriano (abdomen) still on the injured list, Daniel could get a chance to take multiple turns through the rotation. • David Daniel to start Thursday for Angels
Davis Daniel was scratched from his Triple-A start and will pitch for the angels on Thursday.

Advice: The Angels are down bad in the rotation at the moment, so the 27-year-old Daniel will slot in tomorrow. The right-hander has a 5.33 ERA in 14 starts for Salt Lake, but that’s largely the product of a .378 BABIP. He’s struck out 82, walked 25 and allowed just five homers in 76 innings. • Gets green light to start Friday
Scherzer (thumb) is listed as the Rangers' probable starting pitcher for Friday's game in Baltimore, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: Scherzer returned from the 60-day injured list to make his 2024 debut for the big club this past Sunday and was in vintage form in a win over the Royals, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out four. Though he experienced no setbacks in his return from offseason back surgery nor the nerve problem in his right arm that cropped up in late April, Scherzer was pulled earlier than expected from Sunday's outing due to thumb soreness. Per McFarland, Scherzer was able to complete a 25-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, and while the right-hander acknowledged he was still contending with some soreness in the thumb, it doesn't look as though it'll prevent him from making his second start of the season this weekend.
