• Athletics designate Sean Newcomb for assignment
Athletics designated LHP Sean Newcomb for assignment.

Advice: Newcomb has been shown the door in Oakland after struggling to a 6.30 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 7/8 K/BB ratio across 10 innings (seven appearances) this season. The 31-year-old lefty was a notable pitching prospect a few years ago with the Braves, but never quite blossomed into an upper-echelon starter at the highest level. Rotoworld Tuesday, 3:14 pm

  • Designated for assignment
The Athletics designated Newcomb for assignment Tuesday.

Advice: Newcomb made just seven appearances last year for Oakland and it seems that it will be the same this year as well. After posting a 6.30 ERA across 10.0 innings in seven games for Oakland, the 31-year-old will be looking to be claimed elsewhere. In a corresponding move, Tyler Ferguson was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 2:18 pm

  • Nearing bullpen session
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Tuesday that Bednar (oblique) has progressed to throwing from 120 feet and should soon resume mound work, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Advice: The right-hander was briefly shut down from throwing after he landed on the injured list June 23 with an oblique strain. Bednar will be eligible to be reinstated to the active roster soon, but he could spend more than the 15-day minimum on the shelf since he's yet to get back on the mound. However, he doesn't appear to be in for a lengthy absence and may be able to rejoin the Pirates before the All-Star break. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 2:14 pm

  • Kyle Harrison (ankle) throwing bullpen on Tuesday
Kyle Harrison (ankle) will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday.

Advice: Harrison isn’t expected to require a minor league rehab assignment before returning to San Francisco’s starting rotation mix after suffering a right ankle sprain back in mid-June. It sounds like he could be back prior to the All-Star break, but that isn’t a lock. Rotoworld Tuesday, 2:12 pm
  • Facing hitters Tuesday
Merryweather (ribs) threw live batting practice Tuesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Merryweather has thrown a pair of bullpens and faced live batters for the first time since being placed on the IL on April 7. Manager Craig Counsell already ruled Merryweather out through the All-Star break, but the 32-year-old could be ready to go coming out of the layoff. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 1:23 pm
  • Claimed by San Francisco
The Giants claimed Ingram off waivers from the Cardinals on Tuesday and optioned him to Double-A Richmond.

Advice: This is the sixth organization Ingram has been in since January. He's spent all of 2024 in the minors, holding a 4.26 ERA and 26:19 K:BB over 25.1 innings at the Triple-A level. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 1:14 pm
  • Giants claim lefty Kolton Ingram off waivers
Giants claimed LHP Kolton Ingram off waivers from the Cardinals.

Advice: Ingram will head to Triple-A Sacramento as extra organizational relief deoth fro the Giants. The 27-year-old lefty hasn’t appeared in the big leagues this season after making five relief appearances last year for the Angels. Rotoworld Tuesday, 1:05 pm
  • Another rehab start Saturday
Cabrera (shoulder) will make another rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Cabrera is slated to throw 80-to-85 pitches in what will likely be his final rehab start before returning from the 60-day injured list and taking back a spot in Miami's rotation. The right-hander has posted a 4.50 ERA and 15:4 K:BB over 10 innings in his first three rehab outings. Cabrera has been out since early May with a right shoulder impingement. • Set for rehab assignment
Kelly (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday.

Advice: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts implied this past weekend that Kelly was unlikely to return before the All-Star break, but this would seem to indicate that he could be a little ahead of schedule. The right-handed reliever has missed nearly two months with a right shoulder strain, so he would figure to require a few rehab appearances before being activated. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 10:15 am
