    • Justin Verlander has started playing catch
      Astros general manager Dana Brown said Justin Verlander (neck) has resumed playing catch.

      Advice: The 41-year-old has been on the injured list since the middle of June with a neck issue, and the Astros have been tight-lipped about his recovery. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, “Verlander has deferred all questions to the team, which remains insistent this injury is just a neck issue,” but the team has said that he’ll need a prolonged buildup and then at least one rehab start, which means a return before the All-Star break feels unlikely.       Cobb (hip/shoulder) struck out four and allowed one run over two innings in his first rehab start with Single-A San Jose on Sunday.

      Advice: Cobb's surgically repaired hip has seemingly been a non-issue for a while, and he was finally cleared for game action after being set back by a nerve problem in his shoulder. The right-hander will need several weeks to get built back up, but he could be ready to rejoin the Giants' rotation shortly after the All-Star break if he continues to progress.       Advice: Paddack said his arm grew fatigued in the past few weeks, which isn't uncommon for a pitcher in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. The veteran southpaw had a very odd month of June; he gave up six earned runs in 1.2 innings against the Pirates on June 5 but allowed just two total runs over his next three outings before Sunday's unraveling.       James Paxton was torched for nine runs on 12 hits over four innings on Sunday in a loss to the Giants.

      Advice: Paxton gave up a couple early runs before the metaphorical wheels came off completely in the fourth inning when he was obliterated for five runs on four hits, including a two-run homer by Matt Chapman, and one free pass. The dozen hits allowed were a career-high for Paxton, who struck out four and handed out a pair of walks as well. The 35-year-old southpaw had allowed just two runs combined across 16 innings of work over his previous three starts dating back to June 11.
