    • Roughed up in loss
Montgomery (6-5) was saddled with the loss Thursday, allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk over 2.2 innings against the Twins. He struck out one.

Advice: Montgomery's line could have been a lot worse if not for a catcher's interference call and a throwing error accounting for half of the eight total runs he allowed. Among the nine hits allowed were three infield singles, no homers and two extra-base hits for Montgomery, suggesting that this performance was marred by a bit of bad luck. After struggling to 14 earned runs allowed over six innings during consecutive starts on May 31 and June 5, Montgomery had righted the ship over the next three outings prior to Thursday, allowing just five earned runs over 16.2 innings and collecting the win in each. His next start won't get any easier as he's presently slated to face the Dodgers in Los Angeles during a mid-week series. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:17 pm
    • Garcia hits RBI triple in win over Guardians
Maikel Garcia went 1-for-4 with a run scored, a triple, and an RBI against the Guardians on Thursday.

Advice: Garcia tied the game at one with an RBI triple in the sixth inning and came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Vinnie Pasquantino. Those were the only runs the Royals scored on the night, but it was enough to squeak out a 2-1 victory. Garcia needs to have more of an impact if he’s going to retain his spot atop the Kansas City lineup for the rest of the season. He’s hitting .232 with a .629 OPS on the season. • Scratched from Thursday's lineup
Stephenson was scratched from Thursday's lineup against the Cardinals, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Stephenson was scratched moments before first pitch to be present for the birth of his child. He'll likely be placed on the paternity list and will miss between one and three additional games. Luke Maile took over behind the dish. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 4:55 pm

    • Tyler Stephenson scratched from Thursday’s lineup
Tyler Stephenson was scratched from the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Cardinals.

Advice: Stephenson left the club on Thursday evening to be with his pregnant wife, according to a team statement. There’s a strong possibility he’s away from the team for the next couple days. It’ll be Luke Maile handling the catching duties in his absence. Austin Wynns would most likely come back up from Triple-A Louisville, if he’s gone more than a day or two. • Jordan Montgomery roughed up in loss to Twins
Jordan Montgomery allowed eight runs — four earned — in just 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the Twins on Thursday.

Advice: Obviously the defense didn’t help Montgomery, but don’t confuse unearned runs with effectiveness. The southpaw gave up nine hits while only picking up a single strikeout with one walk as well. The 2024 season has been a massive disappointment for Montgomery and those who roster him on their fantasy rosters, and even with four unearned runs, this effort pushed his ERA to an ugly 6.03. Things don’t get any easier with the Dodgers scheduled next week. Rotoworld Yesterday, 4:45 pm
    • Saturday start being discussed
Gallen (hamstring) could start Saturday against Oakland if Thursday's bullpen session goes well, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Advice: Thursday's bullpen session will be the second one thrown by Gallen, who also has a couple of simulated games under his belt since he landed on the injured list. The right-hander hasn't thrown in game conditions since May 30, when he threw just six pitches against the Mets before being removed due to the hamstring strain. • Three hits in Wednesday's win
Diaz went 3-for-4 with two RBI in Wednesday's 7-1 win over the Rockies.

Advice: The 25-year-old backstop extended his hitting streak to seven games, a stretch in which he's batting .407 (11-for-27) with seven RBI. Diaz has yet to go yard since taking a foul tip off his finger and missing a few games earlier this month, but his current hot stretch has pushed his slash line on the season up to .271/.298/.415 with seven homers, 32 runs and 40 RBI in 69 contests. • Maikel Garcia goes 0-for-4 out of leadoff spot
Maikel Garcia went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts on Wednesday in the Royals’ win over the Marlins.

Advice: Yikes. Garcia’s latest hitless effort leaves him with a .174 (21-for-121) batting average with zero homers and six steals over his last 30 games. It’s fair to wonder how much longer Kansas City can afford to stick with him anywhere near the top of their lineup moving forward. Rotoworld Wednesday, 2:24 pm

    • Yainer Diaz tallies three hits, two RBI in win
Yainer Diaz went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI on Wednesday in the Astros’ win over the Rockies.

Advice: Diaz opened the scoring with a run-scoring single off Rockies starter Ryan Feltner in the fourth inning before tacking on another RBI single a couple frames later to give Houston a six-run advantage at the time. The 25-year-old backstop got off to a frosty start this season at the dish, but he’s rounded into form of late, batting .351 (20-for-57) with two homers and one steal over his past 15 games.
