• Outrighted to Triple-A
Garcia cleared waivers Thursday and was sent outright to Triple-A Charlotte, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.

Advice: Garcia was DFA'd on Sunday after accumulating a 7.07 ERA and 1.93 WHIP across 14 innings to begin the season. He'll remain in the White Sox organization, but a return to the 40-man roster will likely depend on his ability to turn things around in the minors. Rotowire.com 21 minutes ago
  • Could return next week
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Pivetta (elbow) could rejoin the rotation next week during the team's May 7-8 series in Atlanta, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Advice: Pivetta is slated to make a rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Thursday and it sounds like that should be the only one his asked to make before he rejoins the Red Sox' rotation. The right-hander has been on the shelf since early April with a right elbow flexor strain. Pivetta was excellent before getting hurt, allowing just one run with a 13:1 K:BB over 11 frames in his first two starts. Rotowire.com 41 minutes ago

  • Grabs first win
Smith (1-0) retired both batters he faced to earn the extra-inning win over the Astros on Wednesday.

Advice: Smith got the last two outs of the ninth inning, and Emmanuel Clase closed out the game in the 10th after the Guardians grabbed the lead. Aside from giving up two runs in back-to-back outings in mid-April, Smith has been one of the Guardians' many successful relievers early in the year after winning a job in the bullpen out of spring training. He's pitched to a 2.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB over his first 14.2 major-league innings, and he's added two holds. Rotowire.com Today, 9:59 am
  • Sticks in rotation
Irvin is slated to start Friday's game against the Reds in Cincinnati, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The Orioles returned Kyle Bradish (forearm) and John Means (elbow) from the 15-day injured list, but with Grayson Rodriguez (shoulder) landing on the IL on Wednesday, Baltimore will only have to move one starter out of the rotation to accommodate the two new arrivals. At least for this week, the Orioles are opting to keep Irvin in the rotation over Albert Suarez, who is now being listed as a reliever after he had posted a 2.35 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 15.1 innings over his three starts with Baltimore. Irvin's season-long numbers (3.49 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB in 28.1 innings) aren't quite as sparkling as Suarez's, but the southpaw has been excellent his last two times out, blanking the Royals on the road over 6.2 innings on April 21 before spinning seven shutout innings against the Athletics last Saturday. He could have a tougher time keeping the scoreless stretch going this weekend, taking on the Reds in one of baseball's more hitter-friendly parks. Rotowire.com Today, 8:54 am

  • Starting rehab assignment
Young (back) was sent to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: Young has been out all season while recovering from low back disc degeneration, but he's finally ready to test things out in game action. The left-handed reliever is on the 60-day injured list, so he won't be eligible to return until late May. Rotowire.com Today, 8:46 am

  • Needs more recovery time
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Thursday that Raley (elbow) is no longer on track to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. "We're going to take it slow [with Raley]," Mendoza said.

Advice: Raley was placed on the shelf April 21 with left elbow inflammation, and while Mendoza didn't indicate that the southpaw has experienced any setbacks since being shut down, he doesn't seem to be progressing as quickly as anticipated, either. He'll be sent in for further imaging in the coming days as a precaution, and he could start ramping up his throwing program thereafter. Raley was one of the Mets' top setup men in 2023 and had gotten off to a strong start to 2024 before landing on the IL, striking out nine over seven scoreless innings while allowing just five baserunners and collecting four holds and one win. • Reds send Alex Young (back) on rehab assignment
Reds sent LHP Alex Young on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Louisville.

Advice: This is good to hear after the team decided to transfer Young to the 60-day IL last week with his back injury. It’ll likely still be a month or so before the 30-year-old southpaw is back with Cincinnati, but it appears he’s progressing and the team is comfortable having him get some live reps at the minor league level. • Giants recall Randy Rodríguez from Triple-A
Giants recalled RHP Randy Rodríguez from Triple-A Sacramento.

Advice: The 24-year-old will come up to the majors and hopefully be an arm the Giants can rely on in the bullpen. The 24-year-old has impressed early on in Triple-A as he’s posted a 1.69 ERA, 1.03 WHIP with a 10/4 K/BB ratio across 10 2/3 innings of work. Rotoworld Today, 8:28 am
  • Sent back to Triple-A
The Twins optioned Boushley to Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Advice: Minnesota will wait until shortly before Friday's series opener versus the Red Sox to announce a corresponding roster move, but Boushley will head back to Triple-A just one day after being called up. He didn't appear in long relief Wednesday in the Twins' 10-5 win over the White Sox. Rotowire.com Today, 8:19 am
