• Garrett Whitlock sharp in rehab start
Garrett Whitlock (oblique) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five, in his rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.

Advice: Whitlock is slated to come off the injured list and rejoin the Red Sox rotation next week. The Red Sox could go to six starters for a spell then or send Cooper Criswell, who has been terrific, either to the bullpen or Triple-A. Rotoworld Today, 9:53 am

  • Flips game around with homer
Velazquez went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Mariners.

Advice: Mariners starter Logan Gilbert was excellent until the seventh inning, and Velazquez made him pay. The homer was Velazquez's third of the year and his first since April 4. He went just 5-for-55 over a 19-game span from April 14 to May 9, but Velazquez now has a five-game hitting streak during which he's 6-for-16 (.375). Overall, he's at a .227/.292/.361 slash line with 11 RBI, 18 runs scored and a stolen base over 37 contests. With fellow corner outfielders MJ Melendez and Hunter Renfroe hitting .183 and .159, respectively, there's room for Velazquez to challenge them if manager Matt Quatraro opts for other players at designated hitter. • Mitch Garver day-to-day with back spasms
Mitch Garver is day-to-day with upper back spasms.

Advice: Mariners manager Scott Servais told reporters late Tuesday that Garver was scratched shortly before first pitch out of an abundance of caution since they were already shorthanded with Jorge Polanco (hamstring) on the bench. It doesn’t sound like a major concern moving forward, but given Garver’s struggles, it wouldn’t be a total shock to see him head to the injured list for a bit of an extended mental reset. • Battling back spasms
Garver was scratched from Seattle's lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against Kansas City due to upper-back spasms, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The 33-year-old backstop missed a few games in March due to back spasms, though manager Scott Servais said Garver's current injury is unrelated to his previous issue. No timeline was given for his return, but it's possible the M's hold him out for a game or two in order to allow him to properly recover. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:35 pm

  • Nelson Velázquez hits three-run homer to lead K.C.
Nelson Velázquez hit a three-run homer off Logan Gilbert in the seventh to lead the Royals to a 4-2 win over the Mariners on Tuesday.

Advice: Velázquez struck out in his other three plate appearances tonight, but the homer was huge, as Gilbert was on the verge of getting through seven scoreless frames. It was just Velázquez’s third homer in 130 plate appearances this season. He had 14 in 147 plate appearances after arriving from the Cubs in a trade last summer. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:26 pm
  • Late scratch Tuesday
Garver (undisclosed) was scratched from the Mariners' lineup Tuesday versus the Royals.

Advice: Garver was originally set to operate as the team's designated hitter and bat third Tuesday, but he'll now take a seat. It's unclear what caused the 33-year-old to be scratched and more information will likely be provided following the contest. In the meantime, Mitch Haniger will slot in at designated hitter while Sam Haggerty will enter the lineup in left field and bat ninth against Kansas City. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 5:58 pm

  • Mitch Garver scratched from Tuesday’s lineup
Mitch Garver has been scratched from the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Royals.

Advice: No word yet on the reason for the change. The 33-year-old veteran slugger has been ice-cold this season in his Seattle debut, batting just .174 (21-for-121) with five homers and 13 RBI in 143 plate appearances over 36 contests. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:55 pm

  • J.P. Crawford (oblique) starts rehab assignment
J.P. Crawford (oblique) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday with Triple-A Tacoma.

Advice: Crawford was expected to kick off a rehab assignment this week as he works his way back from a right oblique strain. The hope is that he’ll be ready to return to Seattle’s lineup at some point later this week. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:48 pm

  • Jorge Polanco (hamstring) not in Tuesday’s lineup
Jorge Polanco (hamstring) is not in the lineup for Tuesday’s contest against the Royals.

Advice: Polanco will sit out Tuesday’s contest to rest and recover following an early exit from Monday’s series opener due to right hamstring tightness. It’ll be Josh Rojas, who is batting .375 (21-for-56) with two homers and three steals in 16 games since being moved to the leadoff spot back on April 24, taking over at the keystone in his absence.
