      Advice: Valdez looked to be in for a rough night after giving up three runs on four hits in the first inning, but he settled in from there and yielded just two hits and no runs the rest of the way. That allowed him to squeak by with a quality start, though he nonetheless ended with his second straight loss. Valdez gave up eight runs over five frames against the Angels in his previous appearance, so this was a decent bounce-back despite the difficult first inning.     • Framber Valdez turns in quality start in loss
      Framber Valdez surrendered three runs in six innings Monday in a no-decision versus the Mariners.

      Advice: All of the runs scored in the first, an inning that could have been much worse if Jake Meyers didn’t cover half of the outfield to chase down a Cal Raleigh fly with the bases loaded. Valdez still gave up four hits that inning, but he allowed just two more the rest of the way. Nevertheless, he still took the loss in a 3-2 game, leaving him 3-3 with a 4.34 ERA for the season.       Mountcastle went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored in Monday's 11-3 win over the Red Sox.

      Advice: Mountcastle has hit safely in his last six games, going 11-for-25 (.440) in that span. During the streak, he has a double in four of those six games, though he's added just two RBI and has not hit a home run since May 8. Nonetheless, the first baseman is putting together a strong campaign with a .280/.317/.468 slash line, six homers, 20 RBI, 28 runs scored, 15 doubles, one triple and two stolen bases over 47 games.       Marsh (4-2) took the loss Monday against Minnesota, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out seven.

      Advice: Marsh was done in by two swings of the bat -- a Jose Miranda two-run homer in the third and a Trevor Larnach three-run blast in the fifth. The Kansas City right-hander has been productive since returning from an elbow injury May 10, firing a 3.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB in 23.1 innings.     • Alec Marsh coughs up two homers in loss to Twins
      Alec Marsh surrendered five runs over seven innings on Monday in a loss to the Twins.

      Advice: The surface stats certainly won’t reflect it, but Marsh held his own on Monday afternoon at Target Field as he was ultimately burned by a pair of tape-measure homers as Jose Miranda got him for a two-run bomb in the third inning before Trevor Larnach tattooed a three-run blast a couple frames later. He struck out seven and only issued a pair of walks, completing seven frames to spare Kansas City’s bullpen. It was just the second time this season in nine starts that he’s allowed four earned runs or more. He’s notched at least seven strikeouts in three of his last four outings since May 10. The 26-year-old righty will carry a solid 3.24 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 43/14 K/BB ratio across 50 innings (nine starts) into a home outing on Saturday against the Padres.     • Braves active Sean Murphy for Monday return
      Braves activated C Sean Murphy from the 10-day injured list.

      Advice: It’s been a long wait, but Murphy is back. The veteran catcher played just one game for the Braves this season before injuring his oblique. He’s been hitting the ball well on his rehab assignment and throwing out baserunners, which shows his readiness to step back behind the dish. With Travis d’Arnaud playing well while Murphy was out, it’s likely that the Braves use a timeshare at catcher for the next few weeks, so fantasy managers who have d’Arnaud can maybe hold on a bit longer. That’s especially true given the injury to Ronald Acuna Jr. could mean Marcell Ozuna plays some outfield and d’Arnaud or Murphy could DH on occasion. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:13 am

      Atlanta activated Murphy (oblique) from the 10-day injured list Monday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Murphy missed more than eight weeks with a Grade 1 left oblique strain but is finally ready to rejoin Atlanta's lineup. He looked sharp during a four-game rehab stint with Triple-A Gwinnett, batting .278 with two home runs. Murphy will probably be eased back into primary catcher duties for Atlanta, as the club is keeping Chadwick Tromp around as a third catcher behind Murphy and Travis d'Arnaud for the time being.       Schmidt (5-3) took the loss Sunday against the Padres after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings.

      Advice: Schmidt took a tough-luck loss in a game during which he took a shutout into the sixth inning. The first two batters in the frame would reach via an error and a walk before Schmidt turned things over to the bullpen. From there, Victor Gonzalez would allow both inherited runners to score. Schmidt registered a solid 16 whiffs on the afternoon and has recorded six or more strikeouts in five straight starts. The 28-year-old is showing signs of a legit breakout campaign and will carry a 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB (60.2 innings) into a projected matchup with the Giants this weekend.       Advice: Bregman has slumped for significant periods of the season and Sunday's performance was his first multi-hit game in his last eight starts.
