    • Alex Verdugo blasts two-run homer in win
Alex Verdugo went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and two runs scored against the Red Sox on Saturday.

Advice: Verdugo launched a two-run homer off Josh Winckowski in the third inning, then knocked a base hit in the fifth before scoring on a bases loaded walk as the Yankees brought seven runs in to score in the frame. The 28-year-old outfielder is hitting .246/.302/.401 with ten homers and 45 RBI across 364 plate appearances. Rotoworld Today, 1:14 pm

    • Gerrit Cole strikes out eight in no-decision Saturday
Gerrit Cole allowed four runs with eight strikeouts across 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Saturday.

Advice: Cole worked through two scoreless innings, including a base-loaded jam in the second that he escaped with a strikeout. A double, walk, and three base hits would bring three runs in to score for Boston in the third. Cole struck out the side in the fourth inning before Rafael Devers took him deep for a solo shot in the fifth. That would be it for Cole at 90 pitches. He struck out a season-high eight batters. Through four starts, the 33-year-old right-hander holds a 6.75 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and a 19/8 K/BB ratio across 17 1/3 innings. He’ll take on the Orioles in Baltimore on Friday. • Another big performance
Pena went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored Friday against the Twins.

Advice: Pena delivered a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to account for his production. That continued a strong run, as across his last 15 games Pena has maintained a .298 batting average with two homers, 14 RBI and 11 runs scored. His .118 across 86 games exactly matches his mark from 2023, though he's on pace to easily set new career highs in RBI and stolen bases while also hitting .285. Rotowire.com Today, 7:36 am

    • Struggles continue Friday
Holmes blew his fifth save chance of the season in Friday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Red Sox, giving up two runs on two hits in the ninth inning without striking out a batter.

Advice: With two outs in the ninth and the Yankees holding a 3-1 lead, Holmes gave up a single to Dominic Smith before leaving a sinker over the middle of the plate that Masataka Yoshida blasted to right field for a game-tying homer. Holmes has been tagged for runs in five of seven appearances since his last save June 9, stumbling to a 10.80 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 6.2 innings over that stretch despite an 8:0 K:BB. His spot as the Yankees' closer doesn't seem to be in jeopardy yet, but the 31-year-old will likely need to right the ship before the trade deadline if he doesn't want New York shopping for his replacement. • Notches 17th save
Jansen gave up a hit in a scoreless 10th inning Friday to record his 17th save of the season in a 5-3 win over the Yankees.

Advice: The veteran closer is on an impressive roll. Jansen has been scored upon only once in his last 14 appearances, racking up two wins and 10 saves on 10 chances over that stretch with a 0.61 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB over 14.2 innings. The 36-year-old isn't as dominant as he was during his Dodgers heyday, but Jansen is still finding ways to be effective and he has yet to serve up a home run in 2024. Rotowire.com Today, 6:48 am
    • Cole Ragans pitches well in no decision vs. COL
Cole Ragans didn’t factor into the decision despite allowing just two runs in seven innings with eight strikeouts against the Rockies on Friday.

Advice: Ragans did walk three and gave up five hits, but for the most part, it was a very strong outing and a nice bounce back from his struggles against the Guardians (4 2/3 innings, five runs). The left-hander has shown that 2023 was no fluke with a 3.28 ERA and 134/37 K/BB over his 19 starts and 109 2/3 innings of work. He very well could — and should — be named an All-Star, but his last start before that game will come against the Red Sox on Friday. Rotoworld Yesterday, 11:29 pm

    • Kenley Jansen throws scoreless 10th for save
Kenley Jansen worked a scoreless 10th inning for his 17th save Friday against the Yankees.

Advice: Working with a two-run lead, Jansen allowed a single but still prevented the automatic runner from scoring in a 5-3 game. It’s his ninth straight scoreless appearance, and his ERA currently stands at 2.08. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:58 pm
    • Clay Holmes blows save by giving up homer
Clay Holmes took his fifth blown save after giving up a game-tying two-run homer Friday against the Red Sox.

Advice: Holmes retired the first two batters he faced, but then a single and a homer ruined his night. The homer, a 405-foot blast from Masataka Yoshida, was just the second he’s allowed in 36 innings this season. He’s been stuck on 19 saves since June 9, and while that’s mostly the fault of his teammates, he has given up runs in five of his last seven appearances. Even though Holmes is almost certainly one of the game’s 15- or 20-best relievers, there is the chance that the Yankees will supplant him in the closer’s role at the trade deadline. • Alex Verdugo goes 0-for-5 in defeat
Alex Verdugo went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts as the Yankees’ cleanup hitter Friday against the Red Sox.

Advice: Verdugo homered in his first game against his former team last month, but that’s the only homer he’s hit in five weeks since May 29. He’s hitting a modest .244/.301/.392 for the season, and he’s fortunate Jasson Dominguez’s oblique injury has left the Yankees with no quality replacements for him in left field.
