      Diaz earned the save in Tuesday's 7-6 victory over San Francisco, firing a scoreless inning during which he allowed one hit.

      Advice: After an RBI double by Pete Alonso provided New York with the lead in the top of the ninth inning, Diaz entered in the bottom of the frame to gather his second save since returning from the injured list June 13. The flamethrowing closer yielded a leadoff single to Jonah Heim before inducing a groundball double play and flyout for his seventh save this season.       Edwin Díaz pitched a scoreless ninth with a one-run lead for his seventh save Tuesday against the Rangers.

      Advice: The ninth started with a bloop single that third baseman Mark Vientos probably should have caught in shallow left, but it appeared he got spooked by Brandon Nimmo’s arrival. Fortunately, the ball was hit by Johan Heim, who settled for a single when an average runner might have gotten a double. A double play followed, and Díaz then got a flyout to end the game.       Diaz gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his sixth save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Padres.

      Advice: A leadoff single by Jurickson Profar and a stolen base by pinch runner Jose Azocar created another nervous ninth for the Mets, but Diaz buckled down after that and fanned Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth to preserve the win. Diaz's velocity appears to be all the way back -- his fastest pitch Friday hit 100 mph -- and he's looked to be in just about peak form in two appearances since recovering from a shoulder impingement.       Edwin Díaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Mets to earn the save on Friday against the Padres. He struck out two and stranded a runner on third base.

      Advice: Díaz and the Mets really needed this one. You could hear a pin drop in Citi Field when Jurickson Profar led off the inning with a single, but Díaz was able to work around it for his first save in 39 days.       Diaz (2-1) struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Thursday to pick up the win over the Marlins.

      Advice: The right-hander looked good in his first appearance since May 25, topping out at 99.6 mph with his fastball. Diaz had been on the IL with a shoulder impingement before being activated Thursday, but he hadn't been his usual dominant self even before getting shut down -- so far in 2024 he has a 16.7 percent whiff rate, one of the lowest marks of his career and a massive drop from the 25.2 percent rate he delivered in 2022.       Scott (5-5) took the loss and blew a save against the Mets on Thursday, allowing two runs on one hit and one walk while striking out one batter over one-third of an inning.

      Advice: Scott was 8-for-9 in save chances coming into Thursday and hadn't blown a save since mid-April. In fact, he had rattled off 19 straight outings without allowing an earned run, racking up five wins and seven saves during that stretch. However, the southpaw couldn't protect a one-run, ninth-inning lead versus New York, issuing a leadoff walk to Francisco Lindor before serving up a walk-off two-run blast to J.D. Martinez two batters later. Despite the implosion Thursday, Scott has pitched well enough this season to not currently be in danger of losing his closing role, but that success could also make him a prime candidate to be dealt by the rebuilding Marlins.       Tanner Scott allowed two runs and blew the save against the Mets on Thursday.

      Advice: Scott came into the ninth inning with a one-run lead on the road. He walked Francisco Lindor before striking out Brandon Nimmo. Then J.D. Martinez got him for a walk-off two-run home run. It was just his second blown save of the season. His last blown save was on April 14th against Atlanta. Scott’s ERA is now 1.93.       The Mets reinstated Diaz (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Thursday.

      Advice: Diaz has been on the injured list since late May due to a right shoulder impingement. He fired two shutout innings with High-A Brooklyn during a rehab assignment, and manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that the Mets will make Diaz their closer once again after the team had used a committee approach leading up to the injury. The 30-year-old righty currently owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.25 WHIP alongside a 30:7 K:BB through 20 innings on the year and has converted five of his nine save opportunities.
