    • Dealing with knee soreness
Hays is dealing with swelling and soreness in his knee, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

Advice: Hays jammed his knee while making a play in the outfield Tuesday and hasn't appeared in a game since. He could be available off the bench Saturday, but there's a chance the Orioles wait until his knee has fully recovered before putting him back in a game. Rotowire.com Today, 2:07 pm

    • Austin Hays sits due to soreness in right knee
Austin Hays was held out of the Orioles’ starting lineup once again on Saturday due to soreness and swelling in his right knee.

Advice: Hays jammed his knee near the wall while patrolling the outfield earlier in the week, which is the reason that he has been held out of action since Tuesday. There’s a chance that he could be available off the O’s bench during Saturday night’s tilt against the Rangers. Rotoworld Today, 1:57 pm

    • Taking seat Saturday
Taveras isn't in the Rangers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Orioles.

Advice: Taveras will get a breather Saturday after going 3-for-7 with an RBI through the first two games of the series. Derek Hill will fill the void in center field and bat ninth. Rotowire.com Today, 1:54 pm

    • Finishing month on upswing
Taveras went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and an RBI in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Orioles.

Advice: Taveras had a bases-loaded walk and swiped his ninth bag in the loss. He's set up for a fourth consecutive season of double-digit steals. The outfielder was having a brutal month, but he's finishing June on an upswing. After enduring a 2-for-45 (.044) stretch over 14 games, Taveras has hit safely in seven of the subsequent 10 contests, going 9-for-29 (.310) with three steals, a home run, five RBI and an additional three runs scored. • Slugs 11th homer
Merrill went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Friday's 9-2 win over the Red Sox.

Advice: The rookie capped San Diego's improbable nine-run fifth inning by sending a Greg Weissert fastball over the fence in straightaway center field. Merrill's power has emerged as the weather has heated up -- while his 11 homers through 82 games is already good for a 21-year-old in his first MLB campaign, eight of those long balls have come in his last 15 contests, a stretch in which he's batting .309 (17-for-55) with 11 runs and 16 RBI. • Jackson Merrill homers in nine-run fifth inning
Jackson Merrill hit a three-run homer to camp a nine-run fifth as the Padres bested the Red Sox 9-2 on Friday.

Advice: The Padres were held scoreless until the fifth, when the first nine batters totaled nine runs on eight hits and one walk against Nick Pivetta and Greg Weissert. Merrill concluded the rally with the second homer of the inning. After that, the Padres put their bats back to bed, coming up with just one hit off Chase Anderson in the final four innings. Merrill’s homer was his 11th in 82 games. His current .282/.318/.439 line is a near match for the .277/.326/.444 he came in at least year, only that was compiled in high-A and Double-A. • Luke Raley (shoulder) remains out of lineup Friday
Luke Raley (shoulder) remains out of the Mariners’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Twins.

Advice: Raley will miss his second straight game due to soreness in his shoulder. The good news, is that an MRI revealed no structural damage and the 29-year-old outfielder is expected to be available off the Mariners’ bench on Friday. He should be considered day-to-day. • Garrett Mitchell’s rehab assignment nearly over
Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy noted on Friday that the final day for Garrett Mitchell’s (finger) minor league rehab assignment is on Saturday.

Advice: Murphy also told reporters that there haven’t been any discussions about activating the 25-year-old outfielder and optioning him to Triple-A Nashville. That means that the Brewers will have some decisions to make about their roster before the weekend is through. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:27 pm

    • Rehab assignment ending soon
Manager Pat Murphy said Friday the rehab assignment for Mitchell (finger) will end Saturday and the team hasn't had discussions about optioning him, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Advice: The Brewers are currently dealing with a logjam in the outfield, with Christian Yelich, Blake Perkins, Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio all seeing significant action during Mitchell's absence due to a fractured finger. Considering the injury and Milwaukee's outfield depth, it's possible that Mitchell will remain with Triple-A Nashville after being reinstated. However, Murphy's comments don't seem to support that possibility. Mitchell was removed from Wednesday's rehab outing with an unrelated hamstring injury but was able to suit up and play Thursday. Regardless of what level he ends up playing, Mitchell should be activated from the 60-day IL this weekend. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 3:00 pm
