The Red Sox claimed Speas off waivers from the Astros on Saturday and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Advice: Speas was DFA'd by the Astros last week, and although he'll remain in Triple-A with his new organization, he will reclaim a spot on a 40-man roster. The 26-year-old righty has accumulated a gaudy 10.38 ERA and 2.26 WHIP through 21.2 total innings in the minors while spending time with three different organizations. Barring a significant improvement, a return to the majors is unlikely. Rotowire.com Today, 11:18 am

    • Throws 20 pitches in bullpen Friday
Hendriks (elbow) threw a second bullpen session Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Advice: All 20 of Hendriks' pitches Friday were fastballs, and the right-hander noted Saturday that three more bullpen sessions are planned next week. The 35-year-old is working his way back from Tommy John surgery from last August, and he is aiming to return to the majors before the end of the regular season. In his last full season in 2022 as a member of the White Sox, Hendriks registered a 2.81 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 85:16 K:BB across 57.2 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 10:59 am

    • Scheduled for bullpen session
Burdi (hip) will throw a live bullpen session Sunday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Sunday will be the first time Burdi has thrown since landing on the injured list May 24 due to right hip inflammation. In the 12 games Burdi appeared in before the injury, he posted a 1.86 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 9.2 innings. More bullpen sessions will be on the menu for the 31-year-old right-hander -- barring any setbacks after Sunday -- as he aims to return after the All-Star break. Rotowire.com Today, 10:32 am

    • Ben Brown (neck) throwing bullpen on Saturday
Ben Brown (neck) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday.

Advice: Brown has resumed throwing just a couple weeks after landing on the shelf with a neck strain. The 24-year-old righty appeared to be putting it all together this season with a pristine 3.58 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 64/19 K/BB ratio across 55 1/3 innings (15 appearances, eight starts) before hitting the injured list. He’s worth stashing in deeper mixed leagues until he’s ready to return in a couple weeks. Rotoworld Today, 10:24 am

    • Nick Burdi (hip) set to face hitters on Sunday
Nick Burdi (hip) is scheduled to face hitters on Sunday in a live batting practice session.

Advice: Burdi has been out since late May recovering from right hip inflammation. It seems likely he’ll be ready to return at some point after the All-Star break. Rotoworld Today, 10:17 am

    • Snags seventh win
Neris (7-2) tossed a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn the win in Thursday's 5-3, 10-inning victory over the Giants.

Advice: Neris went through a rough patch earlier this month but has pitched better lately, tossing scoreless innings in consecutive outings with four total strikeouts. The veteran once again didn't see a save opportunity, as that went to Porter Hodge on Thursday, but it was encouraging to see Neris still work in a high-leverage spot. He figures to remain Chicago's closer moving forward, though he could be replaced if his struggles resurface. Rotowire.com Thursday, 7:23 pm
    • Completes 15-pitch side session
Hendriks (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday consisting of about 15 fastballs, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Hendriks was back on the mound for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August and was upbeat following the workout. The veteran reliever believes he can make it back from the 60-day injured list by the end of August, but he's not far along enough in the rehab process yet for the Red Sox to put a definitive target date on his return. The Red Sox signed Hendriks to a two-year deal in February with the understanding that anything the right-hander gave the club in 2024 would be a bonus, so the team likely doesn't have any visions of the three-time All-Star supplanting Kenley Jansen as the team's closer when he eventually returns. • Liam Hendriks (elbow) throws fastballs off mound
Liam Hendriks threw 15 fastballs Wednesday in his first mound session since elbow surgery last August.

Advice: He’s not busting out the slider just yet. “I’m the only guy in here throwing fastballs.” he said afterwards. Hendriks is hoping to convince the Red Sox to let him aim for an August return, though that’s still up in the air. Rotoworld Wednesday, 12:58 pm

    • Side session set for Wednesday
Hendriks (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey said Hendriks has been throwing "half-mound" sessions, but Wednesday's activity marks the reliever's first session throwing on the top of the mound since undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery last August. If Wednesday's workout goes well, a normal progression would have Hendriks throwing two bullpen sessions per week before ramping up to face hitters. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 6:12 am
