  • Homers, steals base in loss
    Arias went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a stolen base against Baltimore in a loss Wednesday.

    Advice: Arias accounted for two of Cleveland's five hits in the defeat and plated the team's final run with his fifth-inning solo homer. The utility man has perked up at the plate of late, batting an even .400 (10-for-25) with a pair of long balls and five RBI over his past nine games. Arias missed some time due to a family medical emergency during that span and isn't an everyday player for the Guardians, so the hot stretch extends back to the beginning of June.     Advice: After he was on the bench for Tuesday's 4-1 win while southpaw Ranger Suarez took the hill for the Phillies, the lefty-hitting McKinstry will remain out of the lineup against Philadelphia right-hander Spencer Turnbull in the series finale. The Tigers may not be adhering to a strict platoon at shortstop between McKinstry and the righty-hitting Ryan Kreidler, as McKinstry has now sat in three of Detroit's last five matchups with righties.   • Brett Wisely finishes 2-for-4 in Giants’ victory
    Brett Wisely went 2-for-4 with a run scored from the leadoff spot in the Giants’ 5-1 defeat of the Cubs on Tuesday.

    Advice: Wisely’s second hit, a 403-foot double to left-center, would have been a homer in 29 of 30 ballparks and really a no-doubter in most of them. Oracle Park isn’t built that way, though.     Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that Baez (back) won't be activated from the 10-day injured list before the end of the team's road trip July 7, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

    Advice: Baez became eligible to return from the IL on June 19, but Hinch noted that the shortstop will miss the upcoming 10-game road trip and requires an "extensive" rehab assignment prior to being activated. Given Hinch's comments, Baez seems likely to remain out through the All-Star break. Zach McKinstry and Ryan Kreidler have been splitting time at shortstop since Baez was placed on the IL.     Ahmed went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in Monday's 5-4 win over the Cubs.

    Advice: The homer was Ahmed's first of the season. The shortstop has gone 5-for-14 (.357) with two RBI and one stolen base over six contests since he returned from a wrist injury that sidelined him for a month. Ahmed is slashing .250/.291/.323 with 13 RBI, 11 runs scored, four doubles, one triple and one steal through 136 plate appearances. He hasn't been strictly limited to a short-side platoon role since his return, but Brett Wisely is seeing a majority of the reps at shortstop and is also hitting a solid .262 in June.   • Nick Ahmed hits first homer, walks twice in win
    Nick Ahmed hit his first homer and walked twice as the Giants came back to beat the Cubs 5-4 on Monday.

    Advice: The second walk was key as the Giants scored three times to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. The winning run also came on a walk, that to Wilmer Flores after Heliot Ramos was intentionally walked to load the bases. Both Ahmed and Flores appeared to have strikes ruled balls by umpire Ramon De Jesus during their plate appearances, but it doesn’t matter much at this point. Ahmed’s homer off Justin Steele was his first since June 10, 2023. He’s taking a backseat to Brett Wisely against right-handers at the moment, but he’ll continue to start at shortstop versus lefties.
