• Javier Assad (forearm) completes bullpen session
Javier Assad (forearm) threw a bullpen session on Friday.

Advice: Assad landed on the injured list last week with a right forearm strain, so it’s an extremely encouraging sign that he came out of Friday’s side session without any issues. The 26-year-old righty might be able to jump right back into Chicago’s starting rotation mix without requiring a minor league rehab assignment. Rotoworld Today, 8:29 am

  • Belts clutch homer Friday
Profar went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Friday's 10-8 win against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Profar's long ball was a big one, as it knotted up the score in the bottom of the ninth after Arizona had taken the lead with a six-run top of the frame. It also gave the outfielder two consecutive contests with a homer following a 19-game stretch during which he went deep just once. Profar is in the midst of his best big-league campaign, slashing .316/.409/.490 with 13 home runs, 57 RBI, 51 runs and five stolen bases over 364 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 7:20 am
  • Struggles continue Friday
Holmes blew his fifth save chance of the season in Friday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Red Sox, giving up two runs on two hits in the ninth inning without striking out a batter.

Advice: With two outs in the ninth and the Yankees holding a 3-1 lead, Holmes gave up a single to Dominic Smith before leaving a sinker over the middle of the plate that Masataka Yoshida blasted to right field for a game-tying homer. Holmes has been tagged for runs in five of seven appearances since his last save June 9, stumbling to a 10.80 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 6.2 innings over that stretch despite an 8:0 K:BB. His spot as the Yankees' closer doesn't seem to be in jeopardy yet, but the 31-year-old will likely need to right the ship before the trade deadline if he doesn't want New York shopping for his replacement. • Fans eight in no-decision
Cortes came away with a no-decision in Friday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Red Sox, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight.

Advice: The southpaw was at his baffling best, tossing 68 of 97 pitches for strikes and leaving the mound in line for his fifth win of the season. A blown save by Clay Holmes forced Cortes to settle for his ninth quality start, and he'll take a 3.41 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 106:20 K:BB through 111 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Tampa Bay. • Reaches three times in win
Happ went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI in Friday's 5-1 win over the Angels.

Advice: A day after going 4-for-4 at the plate, Happ remained hot. The outfielder also has eight RBI over the last two games, bringing his season total to 52. He had a career-high 84 RBI last year, and he could make a run at that total in 2024, particularly if he maintains his recent level of production for a longer stretch. Rotowire.com Today, 6:19 am

  • Swipes bag in loss
Adames went 1-for-4 with one RBI, a stolen base and one run scored in Friday's 8-5 loss to the Dodgers.

Advice: Adames is up to 11 steals on the year, but he hadn't attempted one in his previous 21 games. In that span, he hit just .192 with three home runs, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored. The shortstop has endured another challenging campaign with a .234/.321/.402 slash line, 13 homers, 57 RBI and 46 runs scored over 89 contests, but his lackluster hitting hasn't cost him a starting role. • Jurickson Profar ties game with solo blast in 9th
Jurickson Profar hit a game-tying homer in the ninth to help the Padres to a victory on Friday over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Profar tied the game at 8-8 with a homer off Paul Sewald in the bottom of the ninth. The 31-year-old continues to impress in his breakout campaign with a .316/.409/.490 slash along with 13 homers and 57 RBI. Just like we all expected. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:59 pm
  • Nestor Cortes strikes out eight against Red Sox
Nestor Cortes held the Red Sox to one run in six innings and struck out eight in the Yankees’ 3-1 victory Friday.

Advice: Cortes gave up 410-, 397- and 386-foot flyballs, but Yankee Stadium managed to hold two of them, with only Romy Gonzalez leaving the yard. Cortes remained stuck at 4-7 while improving his now 3.41 ERA and 105/20 K/BB ratio through 111 innings. He’ll get the Rays next time out. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:58 pm

  • Clay Holmes blows save by giving up homer
Clay Holmes took his fifth blown save after giving up a game-tying two-run homer Friday against the Red Sox.

Advice: Holmes retired the first two batters he faced, but then a single and a homer ruined his night. The homer, a 405-foot blast from Masataka Yoshida, was just the second he’s allowed in 36 innings this season. He’s been stuck on 19 saves since June 9, and while that’s mostly the fault of his teammates, he has given up runs in five of his last seven appearances. Even though Holmes is almost certainly one of the game’s 15- or 20-best relievers, there is the chance that the Yankees will supplant him in the closer’s role at the trade deadline.
