• Josh Winckowski goes five scoreless for victory
Josh Winckowski blanked the Padres for five innings to pick a victory in his start Sunday.

Advice: It’s his first win in nine starts dating back to Aug. 5, 2022. Winckowski generated quite a bit of soft contact today, which was important since he had just three missed swings and one strikeout. Interestingly, all three missed swings came on the slider that he threw just seven times in the 58-pitch outing. Winckowski should stay in the rotation for now, but he has a very tough matchup coming up against the Yankees in New York. Rotoworld Sunday, 1:38 pm

  • Spins five shutout innings
Winckowski (2-1) picked up the win Sunday versus the Padres. He did not allow a run in five innings, gave up four hits and struck out one.

Advice: Winckowski was efficient in his spot start, as he needed only 58 pitches to get through five innings. It was Winckowski's fourth start of the season and his first since early May. The 26-year-old pitched six innings of relief in his previous appearance and followed up Sunday with another quality showing. He lowered his ERA to 2.80 and is projected to face the Yankees next should he receive another turn in the rotation. Rotowire.com Sunday, 1:25 pm

  • Hitting bench in series finale
Carpenter is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.

Advice: Carpenter had gone 3-for-6 with a double, a walk, two runs and two RBI while starting in each of the Cardinals' previous three matchups versus righties, but he'll take a seat Sunday even as Cincinnati brings righty Hunter Greene to the mound. Though the Cardinals still seem to view Carpenter as their primary designated hitter against righties, he'll head to the bench any time manager Oliver Marmol wants to give one his other everyday players a day out of the field. Willson Contreras will cede catching duties to Pedro Pages on Sunday while he replaces Carpenter at DH. Rotowire.com Sunday, 11:16 am
  • Playing time trending up
Merrifield will start in left field and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Marlins.

Advice: Merrifield will get his third start in four games and should be in store for an uptick in playing time in the short term after the Phillies recently placed both Bryce Harper (hamstring) and Kyle Schwarber (groin) on the injured list. Through 16 games in June while seeing mostly sporadic at-bats, Merrifield has slashed .216/.293/.297 with one home run and one stolen base. Rotowire.com Sunday, 10:32 am

  • Won't start Sunday
Laureano (back) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.

Advice: Laureano will miss a fourth straight start while he contends with back soreness. Adam Duvall will get another turn in right field in place of Laureano, who is considered day-to-day. Rotowire.com Sunday, 6:24 am

  • Swinging bat, plans to catch
Herrera (back) said Saturday that he has been swinging a bat over the past several days and plans on catching a bullpen session soon, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Advice: Herrera added that he may progress to participating in batting practice within the next several days, and a rehab assignment could come shortly thereafter if his back responds properly. However, it's possible the Cardinals opt to keep him in the minor leagues once he's activated now that Willson Contreras and Pedro Pages are both on the active roster. • Begins throwing program
Leiter (forearm) began a throwing program Friday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Manager Craig Counsell said Leiter is slated to throw again Saturday as the right-hander begins his ramp-up process. It's certainly is a positive sign that the 33-year-old was able to start a throwing program just five days after landing on the IL with a strain in his right (throwing) forearm. He'll still most likely remain on the injured list for more than a minimum-length stay, but a return before the All-Star break hasn't been ruled out yet. Rotowire.com Saturday, 12:13 pm

  • Held out Saturday
Laureano (back) isn't in Atlanta's lineup for Saturday's game against the Pirates.

Advice: Laureano is still managing a sore back, so he'll take a seat for the third game in a row as Atlanta faces Paul Skenes and the Pirates. Adam Duvall will pick up another start in right field while Laureano recovers. Rotowire.com Saturday, 11:37 am

  • Sitting against lefty Saturday
Schneemann is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Royals.

Advice: The lefty-hitting Schneemann will retreat to the dugout with the Royals sending southpaw Cole Ragans to the mound Saturday. Jhonkensy Noel will start in right field and bat seventh. Rotowire.com Saturday, 10:00 am
