• Begins playing catch
Schmidt (lat) began playing catch Monday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Schmidt still has a ways to go before throwing again, but he has at least taken the first step in his rehab program. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list June 18 with a right lat strain, and before the injury he was 5-3 over 11 starts with a 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB over 60.2 innings. • Next start set for Tuesday
Crawford's next start will come on Tuesday in Miami after his last outing was suspended by rain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Crawford threw only 23 pitches over 1.1 scoreless innings Wednesday against the Blue Jays before inclement weather forced any early end to his night. Despite the righty's limited workload in that outing, the Red Sox have elected to give Crawford five days of rest before his next start. He's tentatively lined up for two starts next week, as a date with the Yankees looms next weekend. Rotowire.com 33 minutes ago

  • Pirates activate Martin Pérez for Friday return
Pirates activated LHP Martin Pérez from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: The 33-year-old southpaw will return to the Pirates’ rotation on Friday night against the Braves. Prior to landing on the injured list at the end of May with a left groin strain, Pérez had registered an underwhelming 4.71 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and a 46/19 K/BB ratio across 57 1/3 innings through his first 11 starts. He’s certainly not a recommended streaming option against a powerful Braves’ offense in his first start back off the injured list. Rotoworld 46 minutes ago

  • Officially activated
Perez (groin) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and will start Friday's game against Atlanta.

Advice: Perez has been shelved since May 28 due to a strained left groin and after making one rehab start, he'll rejoin the big-league club and start Friday's game. In his lone minor-league appearance, Perez threw 63 pitches, so he'll likely be on a pitch count Friday. Prior to the injury, Perez owned a 4.71 ERA across 57.1 innings with Pittsburgh. • Padres transfer Joe Musgrove to 60-day IL
Padres transferred RHP Joe Musgrove to the 60-day injured list.

Advice: Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 31-year-old hurler, this was done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for Austin Davis to join the bullpen on Friday. Musgrove continues to recover from a bone spur in his right elbow and has been throwing off of flat ground in recent days. Rotoworld Today, 1:15 pm

  • Moved to 60-day IL
Musgrove (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday.

Advice: Transferring Musgrove to the 60-day IL opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Austin Davis, who'll join the big-league roster. Though Musgrove began playing catch Monday, he still has plenty of checkpoints to hi before being cleared and likely won't be back in action until after the All-Star break. • Astros outright Blain Henley to Triple-A
Astros sent RHP Blair Henley outright to Triple-A Sugar Land.

Advice: Henley cleared waivers in spite of his potential ability to soak up innings in the second half. The 27-year-old has a 4.50 ERA in 13 starts for Sugar Land. We hope he sees the majors again at some point, since his current career ERA of 135.00, the product of one start this April, is rather unsightly. Rotoworld Today, 12:47 pm

  • Clears waivers, headed to Triple-A
Henley cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Henley was designated for assignment Sunday, but he'll now return to Houston's Triple-A affiliate after not being claimed by another team. The 27-year-old appeared in just one game with Houston this year, giving up five earned runs in one-third of an inning. He'll return to Sugar Land, where he's logged a 4.35 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 54:37 K:BB across 60 innings this season. Rotowire.com Today, 12:24 pm

  • Shifted to 60-day IL
Matz (back) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday.

Advice: The Cardinals had to clear up a spot on the 40-man roster for Gordon Graceffo to be called up and opted to push Matz to the 60-day IL to create the opening. Considering Matz was put on the injured list May 3, his move to the 60-day injured list won't impact his timeline for return. The 33-year-old was shut down from throwing for two weeks June 22.
