      Rea (7-2) yielded two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Cubs.

      Advice: Rea looked strong aside from a speed bump in the fourth inning. He gave up a solo shot to Seiya Suzuki before Dansby Swanson drove in another run. Rea set new season highs with eight strikeouts and 15 whiffs, including six via the sinker. He hasn't lost a start since May 19; in seven outings since then, he's 4-0 with a 3.03 ERA.       Colin Rea allowed two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings in a victory against the Cubs on Friday.

      Advice: Rea’s eight strikeouts topped his previous season high by six. For the year, he’s sporting a 16.8% strikeout rate, down from 21.3% last year.       Fairbanks earned a save against the Nationals on Friday, walking one in a scoreless ninth inning.

      Advice: Fairbanks was asked to protect a 3-1 lead in the ninth inning and worked around a one-out walk to secure his 13th save of the season. The closer has rebounded from a blown save June 20 to nail down three consecutive scoreless saves.     • Pete Fairbanks slams door on Nationals in ninth
      Pete Fairbanks slammed the door on the Nationals in the ninth inning on Friday night, protecting a two-run lead to earn his 13th save of the season.

      Advice: Fairbanks had to work a bit in the ninth inning of this one, as he issued a one-out walk to Keibert Ruiz to bring the tying run to the plate. He battled back though, getting Eddie Rosario on a line drive to right field and Nick Senzel on a ground ball to first base to end it. In all, he needed 22 pitches (13 strikes) to get the job done.       Manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Schmidt (lat) has resumed his throwing program, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Schmidt took the first step in his throwing program Monday when he started playing catch, per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. Schmidt was transferred to the 60-day injured list June 18 with a right lat strain, and before the injury he was 5-3 over 11 starts with a 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB over 60.2 innings.       Clarke Schmidt (lat) began playing catch on Monday as he continues to work his way back from a right lat strain.

      Advice: He’s still a long way away from being ready for game action, but it’s nice to see the 28-year-old hurler take a small step in the right direction after being shut down from throwing altogether for nearly a month.       Hicks did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits, two walks and a hit batsman against the Cubs. He struck out seven.

      Advice: Hicks' outing was marred by a rough third inning in which he hit a batter, allowed two steals and gave up a homer and triple among three hits during the three-run frame. Otherwise, Hicks faced just two batters over the minimum during the other four innings, recording at least seven strikeouts for the fourth time this season.       Rodon (9-5) took the loss against Toronto on Thursday, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over five innings.

      Advice: Rodon was shellshocked in the first frame, giving up five runs before recording an out. He gave up three more runs in the second, all of which came on George Springer's second three-run homer of the game. Rodon at least managed to hang on for five innings to avoid depleting the Yankees' bullpen, but the damage was more than enough to result in his third straight loss. Rodon has allowed 20 earned runs across 13.2 frames during the losing streak, catapulting his season ERA up from 2.92 to 4.42. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:33 pm
       
    • Rodon hit hard again, allows eight runs in loss
      Carlos Rodon allowed eight runs in five innings and took the loss against the Blue Jays on Thursday.



      Advice: Rodon gave up 10 hits, walked one and struck out eight. That Rodon was able to complete five innings and strike out eight batters were positives, but if fantasy managers weren’t concerned about him before this start, they certainly are now. Rodon has allowed at least five runs in each of his last three starts and seen his ERA rise from 2.93 to 4.42. Rodon isn’t a big time strikeout pitcher like he was in his pre-Yankees career. His strikeout percentage is 23 percent this year compared to his 33 percent strikeout percentage with the Giants in 2022. Rodon had a 3.17 xFIP in 2021 with the White Sox and 2.91 xFIP in 2022 before his disaster 5.30 xFIP in his first year with the Yankees last year. His 4.34 xFIP this year is an improvement, but was also a sign that his ERA wasn’t going to remain below 3.00. This version of Rodon is also easier to hit as his 0.88 HR/9 in 2021 and 0.61 HR/9 in 2022 have turned into a 2.10 HR/9 in 2023 and a 1.54 HR/9 this year with the Yankees. There’s no way around the fact that Rodon’s $162 million pact with New York has become one of the biggest bust signings in the franchise’s long free agent history. The 31-year-old left-hander is set to face the Reds at home next week, but fantasy managers have to think about sending him to the bench if he wasn’t there already.
