    • Still experiencing symptoms
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Brown is still experiencing lingering discomfort in his neck, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Brown has been shelved since mid-June with a neck strain and doesn't appear to have made much progress. He had been cleared to resume throwing in late June, but it's uncertain where he currently stands in his throwing program. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 1:01 pm

    • Strong start goes to waste
Kikuchi did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Giants. He allowed two runs on six hits and struck out 13 over 7.1 innings while not walking a batter.

Advice: Kikuchi set a new career high with 13 strikeouts in this one and notched his fifth career 10-strikeout game. Both runs against him came via the long ball. Heliot Ramos took him deep in the fourth and then Tyler Fitzgerald led off the eighth with a solo blast, which ended Kikuchi's night at 100 pitches. He was still in line for the win at that point with the Blue Jays leading 3-2, but that lead was eventually squandered in the ninth. Tuesday's outing certainly boosted Kikuchi's trade value if the Blue Jays end up selling at the deadline. However, he does have a 6.38 ERA and has given up eight homers over his last five starts. For the year, Kikuchi owns a 4.00 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 111:23 K:BB in 101.1 innings. He lines up for another start over the weekend against the Diamondbacks before the All-Star break. • Yusei Kikuchi strikes out career-high 13 batters
Yusei Kikuchi fanned a career-high 13 while limiting the Giants to two runs over 7 1/3 innings in a no-decision Tuesday.

Advice: It’s Kikuchi’s fifth career 10-strikeout game and first since he joined the Blue Jays in 2022. The showing should help his trade value some, but he still has a 6.38 ERA in his last five starts, mostly because he’s given up eight homers. Kikuchi will take a 4-8 record and a 4.00 ERA into his final start before the break, which will come Sunday against the Diamondbacks. Rotoworld Tuesday, 10:36 pm
    • Throws bullpen session
Montgomery (knee) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Advice: Montgomery exited the throwing session "feeling good" according to manager Torey Lovullo, as the left-hander works his way back from right knee inflammation. Montgomery has an outside chance of returning from the 15-day injured list Sunday at home versus the Blue Jays, though it seems more likely the team will wait until after the All-Star break to activate him. • Luis Medina starting Thursday against Red Sox
Luis Medina is expected to start on Thursday against the Red Sox.

Advice: The Athletics are re-shuffling their rotation with Hogan Harris away on paternity leave. It’ll be Medina stepping into his spot on Thursday with the hope that Harris is back to take the ball on Friday against the Phillies. Rotoworld Tuesday, 2:24 pm
