    Nola (9-4) took the loss Saturday, giving up three runs on six hits over 6.2 innings in a 3-2 loss to the Marlins. He struck out nine without walking a batter.

    Advice: The veteran right-hander delivered his third straight quality start and 12th of the season on 100 pitches (71 strikes), but Nola let a win slip through his fingers when he served up back-to-back doubles with two outs in the seventh inning, with both coming around to score the final runs of the game. Nola took his first loss since May 8, and he'll carry a 3.43 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 99:25 K:BB through 107.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next weekend in Atlanta.   • Ragans allows five runs in loss Saturday
    Cole Ragans allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings and took the loss against the Guardians on Saturday.



    Advice: Ragans gave up six hits, walked one and struck out six. This start broke a streak of five consecutive quality starts for Ragans. He has a 3.33 ERA and 3.11 xFIP on the year. The 26-year-old left-hander is set to face the Rockies on the road next week.

  • Aaron Nola strikes out nine in loss Saturday
    Aaron Nola allowed three runs with nine strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a loss to the Marlins on Saturday.

    Advice: A solo homer by Nick Gordon in the second inning was the only run Nola had allowed going into the seventh. He stayed in just a bit too long as two doubles and a base hit would bring two more runs in to score for the Marlins, costing Nola the chance for the win. Still, he struck out nine batters with no walks in the solid outing. The 31-year-old right-hander will take a 3.43 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and a 99/25 K/BB ratio across 107 2/3 innings into a start against the Braves in Atlanta on Friday. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:47 pm
     
  • Strikes out nine Friday
    Ober allowed a run on two hits and three walks while striking out nine over six innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Friday.

    Advice: Ober left the game in line for the lead, but Griffin Jax allowed the tying run in the eighth inning. Ober has been absolutely dialed in over his last three starts, allowing just four runs with a 27:5 K:BB across 21.1 innings in that span. He's now at a 4.30 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 92:23 K:BB through 88 innings over 16 starts this season. The right-hander is projected to make his next start at home versus the Tigers.   • Bailey Ober fans nine in no-decision vs. Mariners
    Bailey Ober held the Mariners to one run with nine strikeouts in six innings in a no-decision.

    Advice: Ober wasn’t as good as he was in his complete game against Oakland, but it was another pretty strong outing. The right-hander’s only run allowed shouldn’t have happened, as Christian Vazquez couldn’t hold onto a ball that would have had Mitch Haniger out by about 15 feet if it doesn’t get by him. He’s struck out 19 hitters in his last two outings, and his ERA is now down to 4.30. He’s scheduled to square off against the Tigers next week. Rotoworld Friday, 9:32 pm
     
  • Helsley barely avoids game-tying homer in save
    Ryan Helsley worked a flawless ninth for his 29th save Friday against the Reds.

    Advice: Helsley very nearly surrendered a game-tying homer to Stuart Fairchild with two outs in the ninth, but Brendan Donovan made a jumping catch at the wall. Statcast said it would have been a homer in 14 of the 30 parks. This was a very quick outing for Helsley — he threw just six pitches — so even though he’s worked four out of six days, there’s a good chance he’ll be available Saturday.   • Extends saves lead
    Helsley struck out one batter in a perfect inning to earn a save over the Reds on Friday.

    Advice: Helsley had about as efficient of an outing as possible, needing only six pitches to close out the 1-0 game. It was his 29th save in 30 tries this season, and he lowered his June ERA to 3.00 through 12 appearances. Helsley leads all of baseball in saves and no one else has more than 25.     Helsley allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in a 4-1 win over Atlanta in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader.

    Advice: Helsley allowed two runs in Monday's game versus Atlanta, but he was able to keep his save streak going. The right-hander has converted his last 28 save attempts after blowing his first chance of the year. He's now at a 2.75 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 43:16 K:BB through 36 innings. Helsley has allowed six hits and issued 10 walks over 11 innings in June, but he's been scored on in just two of his 11 appearances this month, so his place as the Cardinals' closer is not in doubt.
