• Designated for assignment
The Athletics designated Newcomb for assignment Tuesday.

Advice: Newcomb made just seven appearances last year for Oakland and it seems that it will be the same this year as well. After posting a 6.30 ERA across 10.0 innings in seven games for Oakland, the 31-year-old will be looking to be claimed elsewhere. In a corresponding move, Tyler Ferguson was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 2:18 pm
  • Nearing bullpen session
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Tuesday that Bednar (oblique) has progressed to throwing from 120 feet and should soon resume mound work, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Advice: The right-hander was briefly shut down from throwing after he landed on the injured list June 23 with an oblique strain. Bednar will be eligible to be reinstated to the active roster soon, but he could spend more than the 15-day minimum on the shelf since he's yet to get back on the mound. However, he doesn't appear to be in for a lengthy absence and may be able to rejoin the Pirates before the All-Star break. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 2:14 pm

  • Facing hitters Tuesday
Merryweather (ribs) threw live batting practice Tuesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Merryweather has thrown a pair of bullpens and faced live batters for the first time since being placed on the IL on April 7. Manager Craig Counsell already ruled Merryweather out through the All-Star break, but the 32-year-old could be ready to go coming out of the layoff. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 1:23 pm

  • Claimed by San Francisco
The Giants claimed Ingram off waivers from the Cardinals on Tuesday and optioned him to Double-A Richmond.

Advice: This is the sixth organization Ingram has been in since January. He's spent all of 2024 in the minors, holding a 4.26 ERA and 26:19 K:BB over 25.1 innings at the Triple-A level. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 1:14 pm
  • Giants claim lefty Kolton Ingram off waivers

  • Set for rehab assignment
Kelly (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday.

Advice: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts implied this past weekend that Kelly was unlikely to return before the All-Star break, but this would seem to indicate that he could be a little ahead of schedule. The right-handed reliever has missed nearly two months with a right shoulder strain, so he would figure to require a few rehab appearances before being activated. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 10:15 am

  • Kelly (shoulder) making rehab appearance Tuesday
Joe Kelly (shoulder) will bein a rehab assignment with Low-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday.

Advice: Kelly will need to make a handful of relief appearances at least as he works his way back from his shoulder injury, and he’s already been ruled out until after the All_Star break. Once back, Kelly has a good chance of being a mid-to-late inning option for the Dodgers in the second half of 2024. Rotoworld Tuesday, 10:07 am

  • Report: White Sox intend to trade Garrett Crochet
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that “the White Sox intend to trade [Garrett Crochet] by the July 30 trade deadline.”

Advice: According to Nightengale, the White Sox “quietly engaged in brief contract extension talks” with Crochet,” but there is “no optimism towards reaching an agreement,” so the team is now intent on moving him. As of now, the White Sox have allegedly had 15 teams call to express interest in Crochet, who is making just $800,000 and is under team control through 2026. Some potential concerns surrounding the left-hander are just how much he’ll pitch over the summer after having already thrown 21 more innings than his entire career total heading into this season. There are some additional concerns about whether “a team acquiring Crochet may have to offer a contract extension for him to lift those innings restrictions in the second half because of the potential of an injury risk.” We should get more clarity on Crochet’s market over the next couple of weeks, but he seems like a strong bet to be dealt. • Set to face hitters Wednesday
Stripling (elbow) is scheduled to face hitters in a live batting practice session Wednesday, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Stripling will move on to the next phase of his rehab program after he completed a two-inning simulated bullpen session Saturday without incident. The 34-year-old has been on the shelf since May 25 with a right elbow flexor strain and will likely need at least one or two rehab starts before he's cleared to return from the 15-day injured list, most likely after the All-Star break.
