    • Merrill Kelly (shoulder) set to resume throwing
      Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Merrill Kelly (shoulder) will start a throwing program next week.

      Advice: Kelly has been out since late April due to a right shoulder strain and is going to require several weeks of bullpen sessions and rehab starts before he’s an option for Arizona again. Rotoworld Today, 4:52 pm
       
    • Nearing throwing program
      Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Kelly (shoulder) is expected to begin a throwing program next week, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

      Advice: The right-hander has apparently been progressing well in his recovery from a right shoulder strain and is now on the cusp of resuming baseball work. Kelly will require some time to build his arm up before progressing to mound work and eventually a rehab assignment, so he shouldn't be expected to rejoin the Diamondbacks until sometime in July.     • Allows two runs in no-decision
      Manaea did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs, five hits and a walk over five innings against the Giants. He struck out six.

      Advice: Manaea threw 88 pitches, allowing single runs in the second and third innings prior to exiting the game after five innings. He was in line for a tough-luck loss but was bailed out when the Mets scored three in the bottom of the ninth for the come-from-behind victory. Manaea entered the game on six days rest and tallied his seventh-consecutive start of allowing three or fewer runs. Through 10 starts, Manaea has a solid ERA of 3.16 with a 1.29 WHIP and 47 strikeouts over 51.1 innings.     • Sean Manaea solid across five innings
      Sean Manaea allowed two earned runs in five innings on Sunday against the Giants. He struck out six and walked one in a no-decision.

      Advice: Both of Manaea’s runs were incredibly frustrating: an errant pick-off by catcher Tomás Nido to third allowed Matt Chapman to come home and then nine-hitter Brett Wisely hit the third home run of his career. Still, Manaea continued what’s been a great start to the season despite an inability to pitch deep into games. The Giants swung and missed at his sinker 10 times on Sunday, the most whiffs that pitch has gotten in any game for Manaea this season.     • Yusei Kikuchi struggles through three innings
      Yusei Kikuchi was pulled after allowing five runs and eight hits in three innings Sunday against the Tigers.

      Advice: Kikuchi’s velocity was down 1.5 mph on this fastball and about 2.5 mph on his secondary pitches today, and he failed to record a strikeout against the 17 batters he faced. It was easily his worst performance of the year. Hopefully, the velocity drop can be explained by an illness or something else minor. Rotoworld Sunday, 12:27 pm
       
    • Roughed up in no-decision
      Kikuchi escaped Sunday's 14-11 loss to Detroit with a no-decision, yielding five earned runs on eight hits over just three innings. He did not record a walk or strikeout.

      Advice: Kikuchi got roughed up in this one, surrendering four extra-base hits including a solo home run to Spencer Torkelson. The five earned runs are a season high for Kikuchi, who entered this game on a four-game streak allowing two runs or fewer. The 32-year-old still sports a solid 3.25 ERA after Sunday's outing, but more regression could be coming if his 0.74 HR/9 normalizes to his career average of 1.56.     • Allows nine hits in win
      Montgomery (3-2) earned the win over the Marlins on Saturday, allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk over six innings while striking out four.

      Advice: Montgomery didn't get off to a great start, surrendering a leadoff double to open the contest, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Josh Bell two batters later as the Marlins took an early 1-0 lead. However, the lefty would eventually find his groove, hurling 1-2-3 innings in the second and third before later coughing up one more run on a Jazz Chisholm double in the sixth. Montgomery has now gone at least six innings in five of his seven starts this season, though he's also allowed at least seven hits in four of those outings, including a season-high nine hits in Saturday's win.     • Sharp in Saturday's quality start
      Fedde came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 5-3 loss to Baltimore, allowing three hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out six.

      Advice: The right-hander baffled the O's over 103 pitches (64 strikes) and left the mound with the White Sox ahead 3-0, only to see Jordan Leasure and Michael Kopech serve up three homers between them in the eighth inning. Fedde has delivered three scoreless outings in his last four starts, giving him five quality starts on the season, and he sports a stunning 2.80 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 58:18 K:BB through 64.1 innings -- a far cry from the 5.41 ERA and 1.52 WHIP he compiled in 454.1 innings for the Nationals prior to spending 2023 in the KBO.       Nola allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Saturday.

      Advice: Nola turned in his third straight quality start, which was his seventh such outing this year. He left the game on the hook for the loss, but the Phillies rallied ahead in the ninth inning. Nola has allowed six runs (four earned) over his last 22 innings, giving him a 3.04 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 65:20 K:BB through 71 innings across 11 starts this season.
