    • Moves to leadoff
Smith started at third base, batted leadoff and went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Monday's 6-3 win over St. Louis.

Advice: Smith was in the field at third base even though Josh Jung was activated off the 60-day injured list Monday. While that was surprising, so was Smith batting leadoff as Marcus Semien was dropped to third in the order. Texas manager Bruce Bochy told Kennedi Landry of MLB.com that the tweaked batting order was in relation to Jung's return. It's unclear if more tweaks are expected once Jung is in the starting lineup, or if the changes are for both right-handed and left-handed starters. Rotowire.com Today, 5:02 am

    • Slugs 15th homer
Cowser went 3-for-7 with a home run, three total runs, three total RBI and a walk across both games of Monday's doubleheader split versus the Blue Jays.

Advice: Cowser went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly in the matinee and followed that with a solo homer and an RBI single in Game 2. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games, during which he's batting .375 with three home runs, 10 runs, 12 RBI and two stolen bases. Cowser failed to go deep in 77 plate appearances during his initial big-league cup of coffee last year, but he's hit 15 long balls across 337 plate appearances so far in 2024. • Stumbles early Monday
Montgomery allowed six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out one over four innings in a no-decision versus the Nationals.

Advice: Montgomery put Arizona in a 5-0 hole before the team's offense had an at-bat. He was able to stretch out to 78 pitches (49 strikes) in his second start back from knee inflammation, but this was a discouraging performance. He was spared the loss when the Diamondbacks completed their comeback in the ninth inning. The veteran southpaw has a 6.51 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 48:27 K:BB through 15 starts this season. He's projected for a road start at Pittsburgh this weekend. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:59 pm
    • Jordan Montgomery tagged for six runs by Nationals
Jordan Montgomery was lifted after allowing six runs in four innings against the Reds on Monday.

Advice: All of runs scored in the first two innings, but Montgomery ran up such a pitch count then that he didn’t have a chance to work deep into this one. There’s still some hope here for fantasy value over the final two months, but there’s nothing particularly encouraging to hone in on. He has a horrid 6.51 ERA through 15 starts. • Shaky in 19th save
Bednar allowed a run on two hits and two walks over one inning, earning the save in Monday's 5-3 win over the Astros.

Advice: Bednar had a three-run lead to protect, but he made things hairy. He allowed three straight batters to reach with one out, then walked Yordan Alvarez with the bases loaded and two outs. Yainer Diaz's popout ended the threat as Bednar escaped with his third save over five appearances since he returned from an oblique strain. The right-hander is 19-for-22 in save chances this year despite a 4.95 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 36:10 K:BB over 36.1 innings. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:33 pm
    • Gives up six runs in loss
Taillon (7-6) allowed six runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over 4.1 innings to take the loss Monday versus the Reds.

Advice: Taillon was plagued by the long ball on Monday, serving up homers to Will Benson and TJ Friedl. It was the second time this season that Taillon allowed multiple home runs in a game, something he did eight times last season. Taillon entered Monday with a 2.47 ERA over his last eight starts, so the season-high six runs allowed can be chalked up to one rough outing. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:29 pm
    • David Bednar picks up save despite allowing run
David Bednar allowed a run but still got a save Monday against the Astros.

Advice: Bednar loaded the bases, and in a 5-2 game, the Pirates decided not to risk a walk-off grand slam to Yordan Alvarez and intentionally walked him to drive in a run with two outs. He was able to get Yainer Diaz out to with a pop-up to Oneil Cruz, and despite allowing a run Bednar was able to pick up his 19th save. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:12 pm
    • Jameson Taillon hit hard Monday in loss to Reds
Jameson Taillon was shelled for six runs over 4 1/3 innings on Monday in a loss to the Reds.

Advice: It’s certainly not the impression Taillon wanted to leave right before Tuesday’s trade deadline as he was torched for six hits, including a pair of home runs. He struck out four and only issued one walk. The 32-year-old veteran right-hander has reportedly drawn interest from as many as four teams over the last few days and figures to be on the move this week at the trade deadline. • Another stolen base Sunday
Schuemann went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Sunday's loss to the Angels.

Advice: Schuemann went hitless for a second straight day but was able to swipe base No. 11 when he reached with a walk in the fourth. If he had enough plate appearances to qualify, Schuemann would lead the A's in walk rate at 11.7 percent, as he's shown an exceptionally patient eye at the plate as a rookie. The 27-year-old is slashing .256/.346/.364 with six homers, 26 RBI, 45 runs and a 33:76 BB:K in 292 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:34 am
