    • Homers again Saturday
Steer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Dodgers.

Advice: He touched up Walker Buehler in the first inning to give the Reds an early lead. As Mark Sheldon of MLB.com notes, Steer has now gone deep in back-to-back games after entering the series without a homer since May 1 (17 games). His struggles from the middle of the order this month have led the Reds to the cellar in the NL Central, though it's certainly not all his fault. Steer sits with a .227/.341/.403 line with six homers, 35 RBI, 25 runs scored and 11 steals through 50 games this season. Rotowire.com Sunday, 1:50 am

    • Spencer Steer homers again as Reds top Dodgers
Spencer Steer homered for the second consecutive game on Saturday, helping to power the Reds to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Dodgers.

Advice: Steer got the scoring started in the opening inning on Saturday, crushing a 362-foot (94.9 mph EV) solo shot off of Walker Buehler. That would wind up being his only hit in four at-bats on the night. On the season, the versatile 26-year-old is slashing .227/.341/.403 with six long balls and 35 RBI. Rotoworld Saturday, 6:57 pm

    • Moves up order
Smith batted third and went 1-for-3 in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Twins.

Advice: Smith, who made a 10th consecutive start, batted out of the three hole for a second straight game. Earlier in the week, he batted cleanup. He's been an under-the-radar producer for the Rangers, ranking second among the team's regulars with a .782 OPS, and he has been rewarded with a promotion in the order against right-handers. • Knocks fifth home run
Steer went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, a walk and two runs scored in Friday's win over the Dodgers.

Advice: Steer got the Reds' offense started with a three-run blast in the first inning. He snapped a 17-game homerless drought, during which he'd posted an unsightly .527 OPS. Despite a terrific start to 2024 (1.264 OPS through 11 games), Steer now owns a .227/.343/.390 slash line with 17 extra-base hits through 204 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Friday, 8:06 pm

    • Returns to starting nine
Steer (ankle) will start at first base and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Padres.

Advice: Steer didn't start in either of the last two games while managing a sore ankle, though he felt well enough to make a pinch-hitting appearance in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. Monday's team off day plus an absence from the lineup in Tuesday's 2-0 win over San Diego appears to have provided sufficient time for Steer to move past the ankle issue. He'll likely continue to see the bulk of his starts at first base rather than in the corner outfield for the duration of Christian Encarnacion-Strand's (wrist) stint on the injured list. • Spencer Steer (ankle) remains out Tuesday vs. SD
Spencer Steer (ankle) is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Padres.

Advice: Steer will miss back-to-back games while dealing with his ankle injury. The 26-year-old will sit with Santiago Espinal at third and Jeimer Candelario again handling duties at first base. Rotoworld Tuesday, 11:40 am

    • Out again Tuesday
Steer (ankle) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Padres.

Advice: Steer was held out of Sunday's game with an ankle injury and remains out of action after Monday's off day. The good news is Steer said Tuesday that he's feeling better and expects to be available off the bench, just as he was Sunday when he served in a pinch-hit capacity, per Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer. • Manny Machado doubles twice to lead Padres
Manny Machado doubled twice and drove in two runs as the Padres edged the Braves 6-5 in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader

Advice: The two-run hit came in a four-run eighth inning rally that proved decisive. The previous double was Machado’s first extra-base hit since May 4. He also had his first multi-RBI game since that date. We were hoping his numbers would get better as his shoulder got further removed from surgery, but his current .639 OPS is 100 points lower than his mark from a month ago. • Serves as cleanup batter
Smith started at third base, batted cleanup and went 2-for-4 in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Angels.

Advice: Smith filled in as the cleanup hitter after Adolis Garcia was scratched with a forearm issue. He extended a hit streak to five games (7-for-20) but has cooled off overall in May (.630 OPS) after a strong April (.927). Despite the downturn, Smith still gets plenty of opportunities with Josh Jung (wrist) unavailable. Rotowire.com May 20, 5:49 am
