      Advice: Merrill hit the second of back-to-back homers with Manny Machado in the first inning to give San Diego an early lead. The long ball was the second in as many days for Merrill, who has surged in the power department of late, with six of his nine homers on the campaign coming over his past eight games. All six of those long balls have been of the solo variety, but it's still a positive development for Merrill's fantasy managers after he went deep just three times over his first 68 games. Though he opened the season in a utility role, Castro has solidified an everyday role thanks to his positional versatility and solid production at the plate. Austin Martin will enter the lineup at second base in place of Castro, who has been dialed in of late with a .368/.429/.605 slash line to go with one home run, six doubles, one stolen base, nine runs and four RBI over his last nine starts.       Advice: Smith returned from a hamstring injury Tuesday but has been limited to DH duties in both games, and he's still made an impact with his bat. In the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday, he doubled in a run then scored a game-tying run.       Advice: Merrill kicked off the scoring in this one with a 401-foot second-inning blast to right field -- his eighth big fly of the season -- off Phillies starter Ranger Suárez. The 21-year-old rookie sensation has caught fire over the past few days, going deep a whopping five times over his last seven contests since June 12.       Advice: Smith returned to the starting lineup Tuesday after battling a hamstring issue since late last week. He was given a soft re-entry as the DH and could return to his normal duties as the fill-in third baseman for the injured Josh Jung (wrist). The surprisingly productive Smith has been a boon to the Rangers' offense which has missed Jung's bat.       Advice: Castro put Minnesota ahead briefly in a topsy-turvy marathon at Target Field with a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning off Rays starter Aaron Civale. He also recorded another double and walked in this one, reaching base safely in three of his five plate appearances out of the leadoff spot.       Josh Smith went 2-for-4 and hit a three-run homer Tuesday in the loss to the Mets.

      Advice: We’re still not really buying into Smith’s terrific start to the season, but there’s little doubt that he’ll remain in the Rangers lineup after Josh Jung returns. He’s batting .298/.386/.451 through 247 at-bats, even though his exit velocity numbers are actually worse than when he hit .185/.304/.328 last season.       Advice: Smith is back at designated hitter for Tuesday’s contest against the Mets after missing four straight games due to general soreness. It could be a few additional days before he’s ready to get back onto the field defensively, but it’s an encouraging development that the Rangers are able to get his bat back into the lineup.
