• Yu Darvish (hamstring) could still make next start
Padres’ manager Mike Shildt told reporters on Friday that Yu Darvish (hamsting) is still being evaluated and that there’s a chance he’ll be able to make his next scheduled start on Tuesday.

Advice: The Padres haven’t placed Darvish on the injured list — and may not at all — depending on how he feels over the next couple of days. It sounds like they’ll continue to take things a day at a time with the 37-year-old hurler. Darvish has gone 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 53/15 K/BB ratio over 56 1/3 innings in 11 starts on the season. Rotoworld Today, 1:48 pm
  • Steven Matz (back) throws bullpen session Friday
Steven Matz (back) threw his second bullpen session on Friday without any issues.

Advice: It’s unclear how many times he’ll need to repeat the process before he’s cleared to face live hitters, but it’s nice to see him at least taking small steps in the right direction. The 33-year-old southpaw has been sidelined since mid-May after receiving an injection in his back. Rotoworld Today, 1:42 pm

  • Requires UCL surgery
Orioles GM Mike Elias announced Friday that Wells will undergo surgery to repair his right elbow's UCL and will miss the remainder of the season, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Wells had begun playing catch while on the road to recovery for his elbow, but his discomfort continued which will now lead to a season-ending surgery. Elias also stated that it's unknown whether Wells will be getting Tommy John surgery, though more information should be disclosed once the reliever goes in for procedure. • Throwing off mound again
Matz (back) will throw another bullpen session Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Matz threw a light bullpen session Wednesday, which evidently went well. It's not clear whether he'll throw with more intensity Friday, but it would appear he's taking baby steps in the right direction. Andre Pallante is currently filling in for Matz as the Cardinals' fifth starter. Rotowire.com Today, 1:36 pm

  • Tyler Wells to undergo season-ending surgery
Orioles’ general manager Mike Elias announced Friday that Tyler Wells will undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow.

Advice: In a brutal blow to the Orioles’ pitching depth, Elias announced that both Wells and John Means would undergo operations to repair their UCL’s. It’s not clear if that will be Tommy John surgery or the internal brace procedure, but both hurlers are going to miss the remainder of the 2024 season and the start of the 2025 campaign as well while recovering. The Orioles will now rely more heavily on Albert Suarez and Cole Irvin in the rotation for the remainder of the season. Rotoworld Today, 1:24 pm

  • Needs UCL surgery
Orioles GM Mike Elias announced Friday that Means will undergo surgery to repair the UCL in his left elbow and will miss the rest of the season, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The left-hander headed for a second opinion after being diagnosed with a forearm strain last week, and he'll end up having a third straight injury-shortened campaign. It remains to be seen if Means will require a Tommy John surgery -- which he also underwent in April 2022 -- or a lesser procedure, but his absence is likely to push in 2025 regardless. It's a rough day for the Orioles rotation, as Tyler Wells (elbow) will also require UCL surgery. Rotowire.com Today, 1:22 pm

  • John Maans to undergo season-ending elbow surgery
Orioles’ general manager Mike Elias told reporters on Friday that left-hander John Means will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the UCL in his left elbow.

Advice: Oof. It’s unclear if Means will undergo another Tommy John surgery, or if he’ll have the internal brace procedure done, but either way he’ll miss the rest of the 2024 campaign and at least the start of the 2025 season while recovering. It’s just a brutal blow for the 31-year-old southpaw who worked so hard to come back from his last operation. Rotoworld Today, 1:21 pm

  • Athletics recall LHP Brady Basso
Athletics recalled LHP Brady Basso from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Advice: Basso had a 9.49 in three starts with Triple-A this year and a 2.84 ERA in six starts with Double-A. He figures to serve as long relief in the Oakland bullpen. Rotoworld Today, 12:55 pm
  • Diagnosed with sprained UCL
The Blue Jays placed Manoah on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to May 30, with a right elbow sprain, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Advice: Manoah has damage to his UCL and will receive a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister next Thursday, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca. Season-ending surgery looks like a distinct possibility, but that decision should be made after next week's exam. Manoah has posted a 3.70 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 26:8 K:BB over 24.1 innings covering five starts with the Blue Jays this season. Rotowire.com Today, 12:49 pm
