• Cranks first home run
Torres went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Orioles.

Advice: Torres led off the sixth inning with a 418-foot shot to centerfield off Keegan Akin, cutting the Yankees' deficit to 7-2. While it didn't ultimately impact the final score, the home run was certainly a weight off of Torres' shoulders -- he'd gone 32 games without a long ball to start the campaign. The 27-year-old second baseman is now slashing a disappointing .218/.295/.274 to open the year with 15 runs scored, seven RBI and three stolen bases. Rotowire.com 18 minutes ago

  • Homers vs. Yankees
Mountcastle went 2-for-4 with a home run, two total RBI and an additional run scored in Thursday's 7-2 win over the Yankees.

Advice: Mountcastle got the Orioles on the board in the third inning with a solo shot off Carlos Rodon, tying the game 1-1. He'd add a second RBI with a base hit in the fifth, extending the lead to 4-1, before scoring on a Jordan Westburg triple. It was a nice finish to the series for the 27-year-old Mountcastle, who'd gone 0-for-12 in the first three games against New York. The first baseman boosted his slash line to .290/.345/.495 with five homers, 16 RBI and 18 runs scored through 28 games this season. Rotowire.com 25 minutes ago

  • Julio Urías pleads no contest to misdemeanor
Julio Urías pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor domestic battery charge earlier this week, according to the Los Angeles City News Service.

Advice: Urías will be placed on 36 months probation. He must also complete 30 days of community service, complete a year-long domestic violence counseling program, pay a fee to a domestic violence fund, pay restitution to the victim and abide by a protective order. He’s also forbidden from possessing any weapons. With the criminal proceedings concluded, Major League Baseball will presumably conclude its own investigation into the matter. The 27-year-old left-hander has been on administrative leave since last September and is currently a free agent. He will likely become the first player in league history to receive multiple suspensions under the joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy. It’s extremely unlikely he’ll ever pitch in the majors ever again. Rotoworld 56 minutes ago
  • Plays catch Wednesday
Manager Brandon Hyde said Wells (elbow) played catch Wednesday and will be sent in for additional testing, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Hyde didn't specify whether Wells' upcoming tests were part of a pre-planned arrangement, or if the tests were ordered up because he didn't respond as well to playing catch as expected. Either way, Wells' status will be worth tracking in the days to come as he builds his way back up from right elbow inflammation. Wells is eligible to return from the 15-day injured list Friday, but his return shouldn't be viewed as imminent, considering that he hasn't resumed throwing off a mound since being deactivated. • Phillies outright Ricardo Pinto to Triple-A
Phillies sent RHP Ricardo Pinto outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Pinto has the option to elect free agency, but could wind up sticking around as extra organizational relief depth. The 30-year-old righty made it back to the majors this year for the first time since 2019, getting into six contests for the Phillies before being jettisoned from the club’s 40-man roster. • Max Scherzer targeting rehab outing next week
Max Scherzer (back, thumb) is likely to make a minor league rehab start next week.

Advice: Scherzer told reporters Thursday that his thumb is improving and he was able to resume playing catch without any issues. The hope is that he’ll be ready for a minor league outing at some point next week. Barring any further setbacks, he could return to Texas’ starting rotation mix by mid-May. Rotoworld Today, 3:39 pm

  • Better in second start
Brown did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Mets, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.

Advice: Brown got off to a solid start, holding the Mets without a hit through four innings. However, he'd allow the first two batters to reach safely in the fifth before New York scored a pair of two-out runs, forcing the Cubs to turn to the bullpen. While it didn't finish the way he'd have hoped, it was a step in the right direction for Brown after he allowed three runs in just 3.2 innings against the Red Sox in his first start. However, with both Kyle Hendricks (back) and Justin Steele (hamstring) heading out on rehab assignments, the 24-year-old Brown could be headed back to the bullpen. Rotowire.com Today, 3:39 pm

  • Gavin Williams (elbow) resumes throwing program
Gavin Williams (elbow) resumed throwing on Thursday.

Advice: Guardians manager Stephen Vogt added that Williams was re-evaluated earlier and cleared to resume throwing and is on the road back to rejoining Cleveland’s starting rotation. The 24-year-old righty was shut down from throwing last week due to renewed elbow discomfort and has been on the shelf since spring training following a couple setbacks in his rehabilitation process. • In line to return Sunday
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Nelson (elbow) will "most likely" return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's game versus the Padres at Chase Field, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Advice: On the shelf since April 19 with a bruised right elbow, Nelson has bounced back well enough since he resumed throwing to avoid a minor-league rehab assignment. Nelson will presumably throw another bullpen session Friday, and if all goes well, he'll take the hill Sunday with few restrictions, if any. Through his first four starts for Arizona before landing on the IL, Nelson went 1-2 with a 4.60 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB in 15.2 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 3:36 pm
