    • Yusei Kikuchi’s night ruined by Juan Soto
Yusei Kikuchi lasted five-plus innings on Friday against the Yankees. He allowed four earned runs, struck out seven, and walked one in a loss.

Advice: Kikuchi was cruising to the highest degree of the word through the first five innings. He had seven punch outs, faced two batters over the minimum, and the Yankees only run came from a run-down. Then, Juan Soto clobbered a three-run home run to spoil his great night. He had great command of his fastball and this start was an encouraging step back in the right direction for him despite the costly mistake to Soto. Rotoworld 17 minutes ago
    • Carves up Pirates in victory
Morton (5-4) earned the win Friday against Pittsburgh, throwing 6.1 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. He allowed three hits and one walk.

Advice: The 40-year-old looked sharp over a 104-pitch outing, generating 15 whiffs -- including seven on his curveball alone -- to collect seven punchouts. Morton wrapped a successful June, firing a 3.10 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 28:13 K:BB across 29 innings. The Atlanta right-hander is slated to face the Giants at home in his next start. • Nick Pivetta tagged for five runs by Padres
Nick Pivetta surrendered five runs in four-plus innings Friday in a loss to the Padres.

Advice: Pivetta pitched four scoreless innings, striking out four, before giving up four straight hits and a walk to begin the fifth. He was pulled at that point, and the Padres ended up scoring nine times in the frame. Pivetta has allowed 15 earned runs over 19 1/3 innings in his last four starts, taking his season ERA from 3.40 to 4.52. We would say he’s droppable in mixed leagues at this point, but since he faces the Marlins in Miami next time out, it’s probably worth giving him one more chance. Rotoworld 32 minutes ago

    • Charlie Morton excellent against Pirates in win
Charlie Morton held the Pirates scoreless through 6 1/3 innings on Friday in a 6-1 win. He struck out seven and walked one.

Advice: Morton made his old team pay on Friday night as he dropped curveball after curveball on Pittsburgh’s lineup. This was also the first time Morton walked one or fewer since May 10th against the Mets (pre-Grimace) as he flashed especially good command with his sparsely thrown cutter. • Eduardo Rodriguez heading for follow-up MRI
Eduardo Rodriguez (lat) will undergo another follow-up MRI exam on July 6.

Advice: If all goes well with that exam, it sounds like the 31-year-old southpaw will finally be cleared to resume throwing off of a mound. Once that’s done, he’ll need several sessions off the mound before facing live hitters and then several minor league rehab starts before he’s ready to join the Diamondbacks’ rotation. It seems optimistic to expect him back anytime before the beginning of August. Rotoworld Today, 4:19 pm

    • MRI set for July 6
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that Rodriguez (shoulder) is scheduled for a follow-up MRI on July 6, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Advice: Rodriguez extended his throwing program out to 105 feet earlier in June, and Lovullo noted that the southpaw could start throwing off the mound depending on the results of the MRI. Rodriguez has been out all season after straining his left shoulder in spring training, and his initial throwing program was shut down in April due to shoulder tightness. • Stays hot in win
Steer went 2-for-5 with a double, a two-run homer and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Advice: Steer hit a leadoff double in the third inning before coming around to score Cincinnati's third run of the contest, adding a two-run shot off Miles Mikolas in the following frame. The 26-year-old has recorded multiple hits in three of his last four games, tallying six RBI over that stretch. Steer's batting .286 in June with four homers, 16 RBI and 11 runs scored. • Disastrous outing in loss
Mikolas (6-7) was hit with the loss against the Reds on Thursday, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits and one walk over 4.1 inning. He struck out one.

Advice: Things got ugly in a hurry for Mikolas as the veteran gave up runs in each of the first five innings before finally being relieved by John King. The nine earned runs allowed easily marked a season high for the right-hander, as did the 12 hits he surrendered. Mikolas had gone at least six innings in six consecutive starts coming in, allowing three or fewer runs in five of those outings. Thursday also marked his first loss since May 31 against the Phillies. Rotowire.com Today, 3:52 am

    • Mikolas hammered for 10 runs in loss Thursday
Miles Mikolas allowed 10 runs (nine earned) in 4 1/3 innings and took the loss against the Reds on Thursday.

Advice: Mikolas gave up 12 hits, walked one and struck out one. This was a disaster of a start for Mikolas. He only allowed one home run, but the Reds had a hit parade against Mikolas, who allowed a .478 BABIP in this start. Mikolas was hit hard as eight of the 12 hits went for extra bases including six doubles, a triple by Elly De La Cruz and a home run off the bat of Spencer Steer. He’s seen his ERA go from 4.59 to 5.32 in his last two starts. The 35-year-old right-hander will look to turn the page against the Pirates on the road next week.
