• Josiah Gray (elbow) scheduled for first rehab start
Josiah Gray will make his first rehab start Sunday for low-A Frederickburg.

Advice: He’s slated for at least two rehab starts and probably will need more. The right-hander has missed two months with a flexor strain in his elbow. Rotoworld Today, 1:21 pm

  • Cade Cavalli (elbow) doing sidework with Nationals
Cade Cavalli’s minor league rehab assignment is on pause as he travels with the major league club.

Advice: Cavalli, on the way back from Tommy John surgery, threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in Rookie ball on May 20 and then allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings in high-A ball on May 30. Rather than keep him in the minors, the Nationals currently have him throwing with the major league team. It suggests there’s no real chance of him pitching in the majors before the All-Star break, not that it ever seemed very likely anyway. Rotoworld Today, 1:19 pm

  • Throwing 50-55 pitches in rehab
Gray (elbow) will throw 50-55 pitches during a rehab start with Single-A Fredericksburg on Sunday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: Gray got up to 76 pitches during a live BP session prior to being sent on a rehab assignment but will be limited to 50-55 pitches in his first appearance. If all goes well Sunday, Gray will head to Double-A Harrisburg for another rehab start. Gray will likely need at least one more outing after the start at Double-A , making late June a feasible timeline for return. Rotowire.com Today, 1:19 pm

  • Cubs activate Jordan Wicks ahead of Friday’s game
Cubs activated LHP Jordan Wicks from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: The Cubs could have had Wicks make one more rehab start, but they’ve brought him back now, even though they have no plans to give him a start this weekend. He’ll probably be back in the rotation next week, but he’ll be available to go long in relief tonight. Wicks allowed three runs and struck out 11 over 8 2/3 innings in his three rehab appearances. • Rejoining active roster
Wicks (forearm) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Wicks will be back with the Cubs for the first time since late April after sustaining a forearm strain in his throwing arm. He's completed 3.1 innings in each of his last two rehab starts and was stretched out to 65 pitches in his latest appearance. While Wicks previously served as the Cubs' fifth starter, rookie Ben Brown has impressed as part of the rotation and could push Wicks to the bullpen. Before going down, Wicks had a 4.70 ERA across 23.0 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 1:08 pm
  • Loses roster spot
The Cubs optioned Hodge to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Ryan Herrera of CHGO Sports reports.

Advice: Hodge flashed both his wipeout stuff (seven strikeouts) and control problems (four walks) during his first five major-league relief innings. He'll get another chance eventually but for now will attempt more fine-tuning at Iowa. Rotowire.com Today, 1:08 pm

  • Slated for bullpen next homestand
DeGrom (elbow) is slated to throw his first bullpen session since last June's Tommy John surgery during the Rangers' June 17-23 homestand, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Advice: DeGrom resumed flat-ground throwing Wednesday following a scheduled de-loading period as he continues his rehab from a second Tommy John operation. The right-hander has hit all the necessary markers in his recovery so far but has many more to go. If everything goes according to plan, deGrom looks to be tracking toward a season debut sometime in August, although that's very tentative at this point. Rotowire.com Today, 1:04 pm

  • Throwing long toss
Maeda was seen throwing long toss Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Advice: Maeda was removed from his start Wednesday after just two pitches with right abdominal discomfort. McCosky also reports that Maeda reported mild soreness in hs abdomen during the session but the pain wasn't enough to prevent him from progressing toward his next start, which is scheduled for Wednesday.
