    • Released by Mets
The Mets released Lopez on Wednesday.

Advice: Lopez cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week and has now officially been cut loose after posting a 3.76 ERA and 19:11 K:BB over 26.1 innings. The reliever threw his glove into the stands following an ejection in his final appearance with the Mets in a May 29 loss to the Dodgers and in a postgame interview referred to himself as "the worst teammate in MLB." Despite the unceremonious ending to his tenure in New York, Lopez should be able to field some interest from other clubs as a free agent. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 11:28 am

    • Mets release Jorge López
      Mets released RHP Jorge López.

Advice: López struggled in his final three appearances for the Mets before being let go, and between that and the controversy that erupted after his final outing, he’ll probably have to spend a little time in the minors before getting another opportunity. Overall, he did have a 3.76 ERA in 26 1/3 innings for the Mets. His 19/11 K/BB ratio wasn’t great, though. Rotoworld Wednesday, 11:10 am

    • Handling low-leverage role well
Smith has allowed two runs over nine innings since the start of May.

Advice: Smith doesn't have the best control, having allowed six hits and three walks with just five strikeouts in that span. He's also picked up two of his four holds in that stretch, though manager Matt Quatraro has mostly kept Smith out of high-leverage situations since early April. The left-hander's season-long numbers remain poor (6.38 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 12:8 K:BB), but he's been less volatile recently. With James McArthur, John Schreiber and Chris Stratton all pitching at a mediocre level in May, there could eventually be a path to high-leverage chances for Smith if he can keep performing well. • Mets officially move on from Jorge López
Mets designated RHP Jorge López for assignment.

Advice: This move was reported last night and was much discussed after the social media firestorm that followed López being ejected from the game and throwing his glove into the stands. A video was posted where López was alleged to have said the Mets were the worst team in baseball, but the reliever clarified in the morning that what he actually said was that he was the worst teammate in baseball. Regardless, the Mets stated that López’s comments to the media had no influence on their decision to release him but that he was released because of his antics on the field and the fact that he expressed no regret about them. The 31-year-old is likely to get a shot with another team this year. Rotoworld Thursday, 12:34 pm

    • Removed from 40-man
The Mets designated Lopez for assignment Thursday.

Advice: Lopez has been decent on the mound this season with a 3.76 ERA and 1.37 WHIP, but he will be ousted from the Mets after throwing his glove into the stands upon being ejected from Wednesday's contest. Lopez also seemed to publicly criticize the Mets organization during a postgame interview, though he later clarified his statement, calling himself "the worst teammate in MLB." The 31-year-old reliever will likely draw plenty of interest on the waiver wire from other teams in need of bullpen help, and Danny Young will come up from Triple-A Syracuse to fill the open spot in New York's pitching staff. • Mets plan to designate Jorge Lopez for assignment
Andy Martino of SNY reports that the Mets plan to designate right-hander Jorge Lopez for assignment on Thursday.

Advice: The 31-year-old hurler was ejected from Wednesday’s game, and as he was walking off the field he chucked his glove into the stands. Then, after the game when questioned by reporters, he made derogatory comments about the Mets being the worst organization in all of baseball. Rather than being in the mix for saves with Edwin Diaz out, he’ll be looking for work on Thursday. Rotoworld Wednesday, 6:40 pm

    • DFA imminent
The Mets will designate Lopez for assignment Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Lopez allowed two earned runs in just one-third of an inning during Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers and was ejected from the game after arguing a check-swing call. The 31-year-old right-hander then tossed his glove into the stands while walking toward New York's dugout and said after the game that he has been on "the worst team in MLB." Understandably, the Mets will boot him off their 40-man roster and give other bullpen-needy teams the opportunity to claim him off waivers. Lopez owns a 3.76 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through 26.1 innings on the year. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 6:29 pm
