      David Bednar struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning against the Twins on Saturday.

      Advice: The Pirates plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth to go up by four, putting a save situation out of reach for Bednar, who took over to close it out in the top of the ninth. He worked around a base hit, striking out two in a scoreless frame. The 29-year-old right-hander has been excellent after a slow start.       Advice: Bednar worked around a Byron Buxton one-out single to close out Pittsburgh's shutout victory, earning his 13th save this season. Bednar extended his scoreless streak to nine innings -- he's allowed just five hits and one walk in that span.       De La Cruz went 0-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 3-2 win over the Cubs.

      Advice: The 22-year-old also struck out twice, and his 31.7 percent strikeout rate on the season has caught up with him -- De La Cruz is slashing .205/.286/.318 since the beginning of May with only three homers in 34 games. He continues to do damage when he is able to get on base, however, and De La Cruz's 33 steals on the season lead the league by a healthy margin, as the Brewers' Brice Turang sits in second place with 22.       Diaz gave up a run on a hit and a walk in the ninth inning Friday, recording his 13th save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Cubs. He struck out one.

      Advice: The right-hander made things difficult once again, issuing a free pass with two outs before a Miguel Amaya double brought the tying run to the plate. Diaz was able to strike out Patrick Wisdom to end the game, however. Diaz has walked a batter in four straight appearances, but he's successfully converted six straight save chances. On the season, he carries a rough 5.55 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 27:18 K:BB through 24.1 innings, but for now the Reds are willing to let him work through his control issues.       Conforto went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Friday's 5-2 win over the Rangers.

      Advice: The Rangers tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning, but Conforto's seventh-inning blast put the Giants ahead for good. The outfielder has slumped since returning from a hamstring injury, going 2-for-14 over four contests, but his long ball Friday could spark his bat. Overall, he's at a .268/.324/.478 slash line with eight homers, 22 RBI, 21 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple and no stolen bases through 42 games. Conforto should continue to see a starting role in left field, though he could be squeezed out of the lineup versus some southpaws to accommodate the red-hot Heliot Ramos.       Advice: This was Merrill's first steal since May 14. Over the 20 contests between thefts, he hit a meager .224 (15-for-67) with no walks and just one extra-base hit. The 21-year-old still has a respectable .268/.303/.344 slash line with three home runs, 22 RBI, 24 runs scored and eight steals over 63 contests this year. Merrill has been benched against some left-handed pitchers recently, but he should have no trouble maintaining a majority of the playing time in center field over Jose Azocar.       Kim went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk and three total runs scored in Friday's 10-3 win over the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Kim went 0-for-10 with two walks over the previous three games before breaking out Friday. The homer was his eighth of the year but just his second over the last 18 contests. The shortstop has a .223/.332/.393 slash line with 29 RBI, 34 runs scored and 13 stolen bases through 66 games. While his ratios are a bit adrift compared to his last two seasons, Kim continues to hold down a starting role and is delivering solid production in the counting stats.
