    • Idle versus lefty
Benson is not in the Reds' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rockies.

Advice: The lefty-hitting Benson will begin Tuesday's game on the bench with the Rockies starting lefy-throwing Ty Blach. The Reds starting outfield will be consisted of Blake Dunn in left, TJ Friedl in center and Stuart Fairchild in right. Rotowire.com 8 minutes ago

    • Max Scherzer (thumb) throws simulated game Tuesday
Max Scherzer (thumb) threw a two-inning simulated game on Tuesday at Globe Life Field.

Advice: Scherzer, who has been dealing with a thumb issue during his rehabilitation process from offseason back surgery, threw roughly 40 pitches in his latest throwing session. The 39-year-old righty told reporters afterwards that he hopes to head out soon on another minor league rehab assignment. There isn’t a definitive timetable for his return, but it’s not unrealistic to think he could return prior to the All-Star break. Rotoworld 42 minutes ago

    • Throws live batting practice
Scherzer (back/arm) threw a 40-pitch live batting practice session Tuesday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Advice: It's the first time he's faced hitters since he had to be pulled off a rehab assignment in early May following a nerve problem with his throwing arm. Scherzer -- who initially went on the injured list as he recovered from offseason back surgery -- said after Tuesday's session that he's hoping his next step will be to make a rehab start. There remains no timetable for the 38-year-old return to the Rangers' rotation, but things are trending up. Rotowire.com 42 minutes ago

    • Drives in three Monday
Winker went 3-for-4 with a walk and three RBI in Monday's loss to the Mets.

Advice: All three hits were singles, but it was still a productive night for Winker. His performance was marred by a caught stealing to end the second inning, however -- one of many mistakes by the Nats in what proved to be a one-run loss. The 30-year-old outfielder is batting .333 (11-for-33) over the last 10 games, but his only extra-base hit during that stretch is a double, and his homer drought currently stands at 13 games. • Triples, drives in three
Benson went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBI in Monday's win over Colorado.

Advice: Benson singled and scored in the third inning before hitting a two-run triple and scoring again in the fourth. He capped off his day with an RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth. Benson had gone 29 straight games since his last multi-hit performance April 29; during that stretch, he went 13-for-74 (.176). He's now slashing .205/.309/.426 with 20 RBI and 21 extra-base hits through 57 games. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:40 pm

    • Jesse Winker drives in three runs in loss to Mets
Jesse Winker went 3-for-4 with three RBI on Monday in the Nationals’ loss to the Mets.

Advice: Winker reached base safely in four of his five plate appearances and wound up plating three runs courtesy of a pair of run-scoring singles and a bases-loaded free pass. The 30-year-old has really turned it on of late, batting .292/.386/.458 with two homers and five steals over his last 15 contests. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:09 pm

    • Completes bullpen session
Scherzer (back/arm) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: After throwing about 25 pitches during Saturday's session, Scherzer gave a thumbs-up when he arrived at the clubhouse Sunday. Depending on how he recovers and how his conversations with the training staff go, Scherzer could face live batters Monday. Scherzer could then resume a rehab assignment soon thereafter. • Solid in no-decision
Ragans pitched six innings in a no-decision Sunday against San Diego, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks. He struck out six.

Advice: Ragans was strong yet again Sunday, yielding two earned runs or fewer for the fourth consecutive start. During that span, the 26-year-old has recorded a robust 1.13 ERA and 32:8 K:BB in 24 innings. The hard-throwing southpaw induced 14 swinging strikes Sunday and has shown an impressive ability to miss bats this season, posting 10.97 K/9 thanks to a 15.0 percent swinging strike rate that ranks in the 95th percentile. Ragans will look to do more of the same in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend against Seattle. Rotowire.com Sunday, 9:14 pm

    • Picks up 17th save
Holmes threw a scoreless inning to earn a save against the Giants on Sunday.

Advice: Holmes quickly finished off the 7-5 win Sunday, needing just 12 pitches to retire San Francisco's 2-3-4 hitters in order. He began the year without allowing an earned run through 20 innings before coughing up four in a brutal outing against Seattle on May 20. Since then, he's turned in 5.2 scoreless frames to push his ERA back down to 1.37. Holmes owns a 27:8 K:BB and has converted 17 of 20 save chances this season. Rotowire.com Sunday, 8:05 pm
